Now there are four people with Wii Us! Get it!?
If there’s one thing you can count on as a watcher of the games industry, it’s that Nintendo’s trademark franchises will move units. The Marios and Zeldas always sell well, and it looks as though Mario Kart 8 has been no exception. According to the big N, weekly sales of the Wii U quadrupled for Mario Kart 8’s launch week.
Here’s resident Americas boss Reggie Fils-Aime on the topic:
“It's one of the things I have to do with certain media, remind them, look, for us, the drive toward the holiday began a couple of weeks ago with Mario Kart 8. And that's off to a fantastic start. For us, on a global basis, and certainly here in the United States, it's driving hardware, which is great to see.”
According to the latest stats from VGChartz, the Wii U moved 187,028 units during the last week of May, putting it in second place behind the PS4. The 3DS was in third (78,397), with the Xbox One landing in fourth (52,180).
Lifetime sales of the Wii U are hovering at just over 6.4 million, with the PS4 moving 8.1 million and the Xbox One moving 4.5 million. Based on Nintendo’s strong E3 showing, we can expect the Wii U to continue to move forward on the charts.
