E3 2014: Nintendo on Twitch Streaming: ‘Where’s the fun?’

mariokart1Nintendo doesn’t see the value in built-in Twitch streaming.

The PlayStation 4 launched with Twitch streaming support. The Xbox One was supposed to as well, but the functionality ended up coming a few months after the console’s release. Nintendo’s Wii U, however, does not support direct Twitch streaming. And according to Reggie Fils-Aime, it’s not going to.

Reggie was asked about the possibility of Twitch streaming being added to the Wii U, and here’s what he had to say:

“We don't think streaming 30 minutes of gameplay by itself is a lot of fun. Your specific question of just purely streaming gameplay, what we've got to think through is, so what's fun about that? From a consumer standpoint, what's fun about it?"

For reference, Fils-Aime is talking about pure game streaming with no commentary. Of course, this idea could be a cover for Nintendo not having an effective way to monetize Twitch streams, but we’ll have to just argue about that amongst ourselves.

Fils-Aime did highlight Mario Kart 8’s built-in YouTube uploads as an example of what Nintendo sees as “fun” in terms of sharing content:

“Kart is fun because it’s a highlight of the race. You can make some choices as to what parts are going to be shared. We think that makes it interesting.”
