Xbox Co-Creator Says Consoles Must Embrace F2P and an "Apple Kind of Experience" |
Listed in: News Tags: apple, free to play, ouya, xbox f2p
Ed Fries believes that free-to-play and all things Apple are the way of the future and that consoles have to evolve into those things to survive. Fries is on the advisory board for Ouya (the Android console) and recently said, "It's getting harder and harder for the traditional consoles to ignore the Apple kind of experience."
"Anybody can develop for the platform, certification is a relatively cheap and painless thing, and in the old days of consoles there are all sorts of myths and legends that say that's a bad thing to do."
Fries says this is why "the game business melted down in '84."
"You've got guys who make games like Fez who can't do an update to their game because it costs too much, if that game was on iOS that wouldn't be a problem, but because it's on XBLA, it's a problem."
But what about the Ouya? Well, of course Fries says all this stuff will "go away with the Ouya, they'll go away if Apple brings some kind of product into this space, the console makers like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, they have to respond to that, it's just the future."
Then there's the F2P thing.
"They'll have to respond to the free-to-play game model, the world is changing, people want this free-to-play experience, game developers want to build free-to-play experiences and the console ecosystem has to adapt to that."

Angry Birds - 648 million games downloaded in total.
CoD - 124 million games sold in total.
You know math right?

Before you start talking money...you need to first know what it COSTS to create each game. So don't even go there.

And Angry Bird is OVERRATED! After 5 minutes of it, I had to delete from my iPhone because is just a waste of space.

Do you have any CLUE what all the CoD games cost to make? Versus Angry Birds? You know math right?
Also, some of The Angry Birds games are more than a buck.
Also, your OPINION of Angry Birds doesn't mean jack shit. I can play that game to:

.....not to mention full of bugs and issues.

Heard of the CD-I?
Heard of the 3D0?
All those systems were terrible, but at least people heard of them. Yet, everyone acts like Apple never made a console before when they did. How bad did it do? Well, let me put it this way, all these analysts and journalists have heard of all those systems I mentioned earlier, but haven't heard of Apple's old console.
THAT bad.
Apple isn't the future, its starting to fall, nowhere near as good as it was a few years ago.
I want more games like Uncharted, Gears of War, Halo, and inFamous. Not more games like Angry Birds, Granny Smith, or Draw Something.

I mean, I get that you hate Apple, but...math.

I mean, I get that you jump on bandwagons, but... think for yourself.
You are quoting someone making a smartphoneOS-based console who claims that smartphone-style gaming is the future over the classic console style their competition uses, of course they are going to be claiming the future of gaming will go in the smartphone direction. That's like BP claiming that gas cars are better than electric.

Give it a rest.

The guy is putting the future of his career in a console that runs a smartphone os, and thus, runs games designed for a smartphone. Of COURSE hes going to argue that the future of gaming is smartphone-based games.

Whatever, continue acting and thinking like a schmuck if you want. After all, someone has to be "that guy".

Instead I'll continue to kick ass playing Final Fantasy and Infinity Blade. Not to mention I can't wait for IB Dungeons. Enjoy playing that on your console...oh wait....
Between tablet games I'll jump on over to my PC where real gaming taking place. That is, if I'm not playing some kick ass Nintendo game on my WiiU.
Face it kid, some of enjoy having fun on our devices instead of spending time like you getting all pissed off about everything under the sun. Enjoy your heart attack at 30.

They also beat feet to create Smartglass after seeing the first alpha info on Nintendo's gamepad.

Nintendo came last in the race.
1. Sony = Remote Play (PS3, PSP, PSV)
2. Microsoft = SmartGlass (Smartphones, Tablets able to connect to Xbox)
Nintendo = Wii U GamePad
Reply
1. SmartGlass was already in the works over a YEAR AGO.
2. The WiiU in all it's glory was in the "works" over 2 years ago.
Even if it was "months ago" what the hell would that have mattered?
Also, remote play is not the same thing. The average person doesn't even know what it is and not everyone has their console connected to the internet.

I will pay $15 for brand new maps, but I will never pay $15 for a weapon that will crush everyone who does not have it. Where is the skill in that?
We need developers that want to make games because they love to make games, regardless of what system they are on. The mobileOS scene is catching up very fast and are very capable of outputting high quality games, in respect to current handheld systems. The new iPad already outperforms the ps vita on paper. Although the vita will always be a true gaming system because it always the gamer to have more control over their actions, i.e. two sticks, buttons, touch screen.
Android has a big step ahead of iOS because of the built-in gamepad support, IMHO, android is more of a gaming platform than iOS. I love android for that, but at the same time, I can not stand the market fragmentation. For example, when I got my galaxy S3 a few months back, I couldn't even play some of the latest games, and some of the games I could play ran like crap because the graphics chip on the US S3 wasn't supported. WTF?
I am now back to iOS, although I dearly miss gamepad support and ease of classic emulation.
So until apple comes out with a standardized control, I will never consider any iOS device a true gaming platform. Casual games? Sure why the hell not? But you will never catch me playing a casual game, free to play, pay to win, game for hours at a time like I can with a true gaming device like the vita, 360, ps3
Apple/android has the potential to destroy handheld gaming and take a place in the console market.
Don't tell me you guys were not excited when you saw crazy taxi, soul caliber, mvc2, gta, jet set radio, sonic on the play and App Store...
Oh wait, then our dreams were crushed when we realized it was all a touchscreen nightmare...

Aside from freeware, you have to pay to play a game. So instead of paying $1-$20 for a game where you get to buy exactly what you want, you would rather pay $60 for all games no matter what, even if you wind up not liking it, oh well!
Yeah, that makes sense.
"but I will never pay $15 for a weapon that will crush everyone who does not have it."
None of the countless freemium games I've played have been like that. Just stay away from those.

I am more attracted to having the game free to begin with, somewhat a limited content to how the $60 games are now, then making the next chapter or regions cost money.
I think that the best game that has accomplished this new system, with what I have played, would have to be castlevania harmony of despair.
The game was $15 to start, then if you wanted extra characters or levels you had to pay. The characters had no real competitive advantage to the ones available from the start. There was also new weapons and armor in the new maps. What makes it great is that just because you bought the new maps doesn't mean you get the new weapons. You still have to earn them, in a fashion, although some of it is pure luck.
I can understand paying for extra costumes or variations of weapons, as long as they do not give the buyer a competitive advantage over someone who did not.
Unfortunately most of the free to play games on mobile devices are built around that idea. Who ever has more money will have the advantage. In taking about games that could be great on the mobile platform that order and chaos, dead trigger, shadow gun, etc
