Wat? Microsoft Picks Up Xbox 8 Domain |
Listed in: News Tags: arbitration, Microsoft, windows 8, xbox, xbox 8
I don’t know much about branding or building a heartless corporation, but Microsoft sure does. So, when I read about the company winning the xbox8.us and xbox8.org web addresses through an arbitration case with a Chinese citizen, I tend to just assume the company knows what it’s doing.

Of course, Microsoft won a few other domains in the dispute: XboxPhone.com, XboxTablet.com, XboxLiveTv.com and XboxCompanion.com. One curious fact: Microsoft has largely avoided the person in charge of xbox8.com—for now. Anyway, it’s unclear exactly why Microsoft is after the Xbox8 domain, but since all of its products this (and next) year are branded to match Windows 8, it’s entirely possible the console maker is considering this as the name of their next device. Which, of course, would be stupid.
Then again, perhaps Microsoft just wanted to keep the domains secure in case it needed them for some future mystery device. Who even knows these days?
What do you think—would branding the new Xbox to match Windows 8 be a smart idea?

Sort of like the Zune name being tied to a failed piece of hardware.
