Videogames Fighting Cancer

It may be a bit indirect, but it’s still helping. Biophysicist and computer scientist Samuel Cho says that videogames are to thank for his research and use of graphics cards to render cancer cells and learn how they divide and grow.

He says his research could lead to improved cancer-fighting drugs and none of it would have been possible without videogames. Why?

He says that if it wasn't for videogames, there was ‘no way’ he could afford these graphics cards to do the simulations. The more gamers, he says, the cheaper and cheaper the cards get; “I mean, this is just basic economics”.

The cards he uses now (he doesn't specify) would have cost around $2,000 3 years ago. Now, they’re about $500.

It isn’t just price going down, it’s power-for-price going up, as he says ‘the great part about it is that they’re actually getting cheaper [and] even faster’. Cho and his team have already simulated an RNA molecule, a component of the human telomerase enzyme, only found in cancer cells.

Well, that’s that. Also today I reported that videogames can actually improve eyesight!

Good days for gaming are good days for gamers (that‘s us).

the increased sophistication and rendering power with reduced price point proves to provide ample raw processing power for cancer research. this also applies for consoles that can run the clients for this type of calculations (i.e. ps3 that can run linux)

my work here is done
