Stuart Black Leaves City Interactive, Citing Creative Differences

Stuart Black, the designer known for the 2006 shooter also called "Black," has left City Interactive, citing creative differences over the game he joined the company to make, the World War II shooter Enemy Front. Apparently it happened months ago but has just come to light.

 

City Interactive's North American VP of sales and marketing, Marshall Zwicker, said, "We can confirm that Stuart Black is no longer working with City Interactive on the Enemy Front project.

 

"Based on early builds of the game and various internal and external feedback that we received, we decided to take a different approach to the gameplay, story, and characters than originally envisioned.

 

"We are now working with Mark Bristol, a very experienced cinematic director from the US, and together with him we have been implementing what we feel are some really compelling changes.

 

"We are very happy with the progress of the game and look forward to showing it off in the months to come."

 

For his part, Stuart Black has formed his own indie studio simply called "Self," where he's chewing on working on an iOS project with Creative Light and a PC game using the Unreal Engine. Of course, he had a lot to say as well.

 

"All I care about is making games," Mr. Black told Game Informer. "I really just want to make a really fucking cool game. I really don't care about any of that other stuff, the politicking or whatever is involved when you get in any large group of people."

 

Speaking more specifically about City Interactive, he said, "I kind of felt, regardless of how they framed it as 'we're making you redundant because of strategic and financial reasons' it's inevitable, I would do the same, that people are going to think 'he fucked that up.'

 

"The only reason you get rid of your creative director halfway through is because they fucked up in some significant way.

 

"So I kind of felt I looked really bad, my credibility is really going to take a hit from this when people start hearing about this and I just felt like I've got everything to prove. And it just comes down to making a game, so let's just make a fucking game."
