It's still just a rumor, but MCV is reporting that Microsoft is telling its partners that the next-gen Xbox will not have a disc drive but will instead "be compatible with some sort of interchangeable solid-state storage." So unless they really make some sort of overt effort it looks like backwards compatibility may be out the window.

Also making the rumor rounds is that the new Xbox will debut at E3 this year and will be out in 2013.

MCV approached Microsoft about the rumor and got the usual answer: "Xbox 360 has found new ways to extend its lifecycle like introducing the world to controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment partnerships. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention. Beyond that we do not comment on rumors or speculation."

Oh boy.

Come on. I know it's a nice feature but no one ever really uses the backwards compatibility feature. The console will be a bit cheaper too like the PS3 losing the emotion chip.

Not that much cheaper, around $50 for Bluray drives nowadays. You cut out a Rom drive that's a bit stupid to me. The ps3 got cheaper due to parts over time getting easier / cheaper to reproduce. So the Emotion chip had not much to do with the cost cause they didn't really drop the price after they took it out.

This just scares me away from buying it for sure if I didn't already not want to. I thought the whole idea was to impress your customers (or potential customers) by luring them in. When has taking something away ever helped sales? Who am I kidding, I owned a 360 years ago, took one look at my game library of 3 months into owning it (A whole whopping 1 game Saints Row) looked into the for seeable future of the console, saw nothing but FPS's and sold the damn thing to my friend which then rlod a year later. Disaster avoided!

This seems curious. As long as there's a physical way to distribute, it could be possible.

Too soon for all-digital delivery.

Microsoft will make you buy the drive unit separately. With their history on cashing it on every Xtra little attachment, owners would have to buy it all piece by piece.

:D
Seeing how successful the HD-DVD drive did, I can't imagine a external drive being successful unless Microsoft don't do a Micro$oft by making the price extortionate and necessary.

Mind you my DVD drive in my Xbox360 has botched up on my about 5 times, plus the same has happened with my original Xbox.
