It must be hard to break news on April Fool's Day, especially if you're a big video game company. It seems a leaked press release has lead to people questioning whether Microsoft will go down the route of basic membership. So yesterday it came to light that for the remainder of the Xbox 360 life cycle access to the Xbox Live Network will come at no cost beginning this July 1st.

While some people are saying it's too good to be true, Microsoft isn't letting you off that easy because a gold membership will still be required to access extra features like Facebook, YouTube and Crackle. The main thing is that gameplay will be free for all users bringing the network's offerings on par with the PSN price wise, however with the cost now removed this puts the Xbox live network miles ahead of the competition.

So what do you think? Awesomeness on Microsoft's part or elaborate April Fool's Day ruse?

why are you comparing Xbox Live to PS3?

You should compare it to PSN or SEN(Sony Entertainment Network) as I believe they are calling it now days , and what I think they mean is that Xbox Live has always been superior to PSN/SEN, and is (if this isn't not an April fools joke) even better now

Actually The only thing free is Sony's gaming network. Psn/Sen cost money, Sony's online Home game costs money to play, cost money for movies and tv shows. So yes I would say this move puts Microsoft ahead of the competition, as they basically offer similar services now for online gaming.

ps home doesnt cost money you idiot. and tv shows are free as on demand services (such as tvnz in new zealand) are completely free. also why the heeeelllll would any company NOT charge for movies? if they didnt they must either have: A) paid a crud load of money to hollywood or B) incorporate The Pirate Bay into their software. so.... similar services... maybe. but the same services? no way. PSN is faaaar better. (BTW was using the FREE music streaming app Vidzone today, and it has improved dramatically from when it was first released. in other words, its now a joy to use) :D

PSN will never be as good as Xbox live for many reasons. Obviously Xbox live has better security, better players, more features, and a better all around system. PSN is free because they don't pay anyone to keep it up to date. Why do you think XBOX gets everything first ?!

Making people pay to play online after you already paid for the game is as stupid and greedy as you can get. So perhaps they got some common sense and decided to do the right thing. Just maybe.....

is people still bitching about this I though is was made clear years ago that Xbox Live is more than worth the fee, it's not really that much unless you make less than a 100 USD a year

FYI, servers aren't free so they have to charge the people who use them.

Don't you dare to think Sony will always provide free online gaming because that's possibly gonna change.

Yeah servers on cheap, but you see advertisement on the xbox dashboard. So they're making money of somewhere to pay for those server, and it's not like microsoft is using it's own server for third party games.

Dude, there are no servers, it's peer to peer, it takes your machine, connected online to another machine to figure things out.

The biggest con on xbox live and the idiots who pay for it defend it, pretending they are paying for servers. What a joke. Get a job and live in the real world instead of using your pocket money or your parents to pay for shit, then you'll know how much of a stinger paying for Xbox live can be when you got bills to pay.

@PS360Owner1

They don't charge on PC game servers. Anyone can hop on a game of pretty much any FPS they don't charge squat to play online. So why should they charge on Xbox? It's been free for like ever on the PC!

Too little too late.

With the amount people already pay for consoles and games, online gaming should be free from day one.

Especially seeing as MS have stuck adverts on the dashboard!

If thats true, then I want my money back. Online gaming is the only reason that I've paid for live.
What do I need with Facebook and YouTube? I have a computer!

I don't mind paying for Xbox Live. I use tons of stuff on it (Netflix, Hulu+, games, movies, etc) and the fee is worth it to me.

Besides, you can pick up year-long cards for like $30 if you look around before you buy.

Aside from gaming why would you need pay extra to use the other features?

If party chat and online play are free, then this will be great, seeing as those are the only reasons I use XBL Gold cards.

I'm just wondering why they are doing it on July 1st(that is, if this is real.)

It's cool but acessing all Xbox LIVE features for a little price sure is worth it.

£2 for 2 Gold months = Win for me!

I wreck the shit out of the players who hate dirty wankers like myself. :P

Just so you know it breaks down like this...

Xbox360- Pay 60.00 for a yr...
Pay 60 for a game.
The price for that game is then accumulated total so lets take CoD MW3...

Xbox servers...
Kept up on minimal lag fast downloads and loads of demos add-ons updates...
That is paid by the 6000000000 people that paid 60 stank ass little dollars per year and then every game that you may want.

PS3 servers. Pay 60 for a game online servers just good enough to play with but lagfest city. Downloads take EONS for just a simple update...

6 hours to update DC universe. WTF...
2 hrs for ff7 to download. Thats only 3 gbs max they were 700MB cds 3 cds 2800 MB 2.8GB 2 Hrs?.

I got shivering isles from xbox live in like 13 minutes and downloaded 4 1.5gb demos in 20 mins.

Thats difference. We pay for server quality not price... Not to reuse this broke ass saying over again but...

"YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!"
