Rod Fergusson: Ending Gears of War 3 trilogy is 'a lot of pressure' |

Gears of War 3 Executive Producer Rod Fergusson opened up the last installment in the famed Xbox 360-exclusive franchise, from their plans on ending it with a big bang, to how they're aiming for bigger numbers, to the leak that could have been devastating for their strategy, but instead worked out to their favor in the end.
As this is the end of the massive trilogy that has enamored gamers for several long years, Epic games is making sure that they will be delivering a game whose ending is nothing short of epic. Among the many considerations they had to look into was the release date. It was originally supposed to come out back in April, but they later decided against it and instead pegged it to a September release.

"Achieving the highest possible level of polish is one of the things we really pride ourselves on. It's more about the quality of the experience than necessarily the quantity." Don't mistake this statement, however, to mean that they will not be addressing the issue of quantity as well, insofar as content is concerned.
"We just looked at that extension as allowing more time to polish the experience. Being able to do the beta meant we were going to have a smoother multiplayer. And being able to spend more time with the campaign - it's the biggest campaign that we've ever made. So being able to have that extra time and go through it over and over again, and polish it up is really beneficial. But our ambition is really high. Normally when you're working on the first one, you can say, 'well we won't do this part of it because we'll move that to the second version'. But when you're at the end of the trilogy, it's a lot of pressure."
Admittedly, the Gears franchise has always had a tough time even cutting it close to the sales numbers of Call of Duty. Looking at it objectively, Fergusson surmises that there are certain elements in their game which not only attracts gamers, but also, at the same time, repel potential fans. Certain elements, such as, for example, the chainsaw.
So he expounds: "We have some elements in our IP that are double-edged swords. The Lancer being a chainsaw gun is one of the things that draws people. but it's also one of the things that has the potential to repel some people because of its over-the-top nature. The fact that we fight monsters, I think that draws people, but other people are looking for more realistic settings. So these are the types of things that we talk about in terms of what might be limiting the franchise, but at the same time those exact same things are potentially what causes this franchise to be successful so you have to be careful about how you change that."
Early last month, Gears of War 3 got a wrench thrown in their wheel when leaked copies of the game showed up on torrent sites. Both Epic Games and Microsoft moved quickly to have these copies taken down from the sites, and an investigation later on was carried out.
Rod Fergusson spills a whole lot more about the highly anticipated ending to Gears of Wars 3. To check out the rest of the lengthy interview, just head over to the source linked below.
