What will the next generation Xbox be like? According to some sources, it will come in two versions set to appeal to different crowds.

The Xbox 720 or whatever you want to call it for now is pretty much a mystery, but many feel it will launch sometime next year. A report from the Verge which cites various sources with the inside scoop to Microsoft’s plans said that the next Microsoft Xbox will come in two distinct versions. The first version will be a full-blown console set to pick up where the Xbox 360 leaves off. The second version will be based off the Windows 8 OS. It won’t allow you to run the latest triple-A titles, but it will let you play downloadable Xbox Live titles and will carry a more affordable price tag. Think of it as a set-top box for more casual consumers.
The Verge report also claims that this two version approach by Microsoft is being employed to make its core Xbox software scalable to run on a wide range of devices. You might be able to enjoy an Xbox Live experience on a phone, or you might see TVs with built-in Xbox functionality.
