In the latest dev diary for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Grant Kirkhope - Audio Director for Big Huge Games - takes you behind the scenes and gives you a look into his process for creating the music and sound effects for the game. Kirkhope says John Williams (Star Wars, ET, Indiana Jones, Superman - if you watch movies, you've heard his music) is a big influence on him and you can hear it in the music in this video. The shots of his full orchestra recording the soundtrack particularly drive this point home.

Kirkhope is also responsible for the sound effects in Reckoning, and he knows the value of non-irritating sound effects. He knows that we'll be hearing our character's footsteps, to use his example, for hours on end and that if they're annoying we'll go nuts.

Kirkhope has been in the biz for a long time and has worked on many games, as evidenced by his talk of working on Donkey Kong and Banjo and Kazooie and recording gorilla farts. He also apologizes for the Donkey Kong Rap. Google it.

The Reckoning demo is out now. I played it and while it's standard fantasy and takes some time to get going I found it pretty interesting. Plus, you get Mass Effect 3 goodies for playing. The full game is out February 7th.

This game looks cool, but I can't find any motivation to try it.
