"I am happy to announce that we’re doing an Xbox 360 System Update Preview program for our next release, and the opportunity to sign up is now available," notes Major Nelson. "We are conducting an open call for US based participants for a public preview to help us prepare for an updated Xbox 360 disc format. This is an important update as we continually strive to improve our products and we could not do so without the help of our great Xbox community. As part of the preview program, you will receive a copy of Halo: Reach along with other possible rewards."

Major also posted a couple off notes before you proceed:

  • They are looking for multiple thousands of participants, so your chances of making it in are good.
  • This opportunity is open to Xbox Live Members in US region only due to disc distribution limitations
  • To avoid any problems, read the survey carefully and double check all the information you provide.
  • While both Xbox Live Gold and Silver members can sign up, priority will be given to Gold members in the selection process.
  • This preview will not impact voice/party chat at all.

You can sign up for the Xbox Live Update Preview Program here.

disc format: XGD3 (a bit more space for developers and new/more anti piracy checks)

According to some people on XBox scene, they are increasing the maximum disc size by removing padding and adding new security to prevent piracy eg, more hash checking (although the latter is pretty obvious really and was my first thought).

JTAG consoles are probably going to become more popular (even though they are relatively expensive enough as it is), I wonder if a new hack will come out soon?

High possibility what with the way companies update these products, usually without too much checking on whether exploits are present or not.

What did a hacker ever do to you? they aren't the pirates, they're workign with and against the security of the system. it's a game to them. it is NOT about being a pirate.

When they release their hacks to an online community it's no longer a game to others. There's this little thing called responsibility which some of them seem to have forgotten about. If they hack a system someone has invested millions of dollars in, open it up so that people can just fileshare their way to a game and hack online games they've basically done something bad. Really bad. Regardless of whether it's illegal where they live or not.

Ugh, the comments against hackers is getting old, think of something new instead. If you can, that is.

This opportunity is great but it's only for those who live in USA, wish I could take part too.

You should be typing that in the PS3/Sony section because Microsoft doesnt give a fuck about piracy or hacking

Why else would they PAY a hacker to hack something? (Geohot....)

We get enough idiots posting on PS3 news, we don't need another.

Also, I'm pretty excited that Microsoft is looking at ways to allow for more data on each disc. Hopefully it'll be put to better use than it is on the PS3. It's great to have the space of a Blu-ray, but when all you use it for is better quality video it seems pretty moot.
