Microsoft Updating Rules for Fan Content

Microsoft has just issued a quick update to its “Game Content Usage Rules,” which dictate how and where you can use stuff from Microsoft games in your fan creations. It’s nothing too insane, but definitely worth a look for anyone involved in the machinima or fan-art worlds.

For starters, whenever you use content from a Microsoft product, you must now indicate the name of the game and add a Microsoft Corporation copyright. Example: That painting you just finished of Master Chief making out with another, girlier Master Chief would need to say:

“HALO © Microsoft Corporation. Master Chiefs in Love was created under Microsoft’s ‘Game Content Usage Rules’ using assets from HALO. As such, it does not contribute to the official narrative of the fictional universe, if applicable.”

So, you know. Just paint that at the bottom or something. Another big change is that you can’t use the name of the game in the title. In other words, you can make stuff with Halo and name it Red vs. Blue, but not Halo: The Untold Story or something like that.

Check out the full list of rules over at the Xbox website if you think this is a thing you need to know.

... seriously? MS wants to dictate what people can do with fan works? Or does this only apply if people try to sell them commercially?

The new rules says that you can't host created content or streamed games, onto sites that require a paid subscription to see the content or download. In other words, websites or yourself can't get an profits for anything related to Microsoft related games. Plus I heard you can't have special advertisement for your youtube chaannel.
