Even backing HD-DVD, however, Microsoft is remaining flexible and Peter Moore has stated that a Blue-Ray drive is an option for the Xbox 360 if the need arises. Moore admits that Microsoft is unsure of the final outcome of the format war, worst case being a repeat of the Beta vs. VHS war of the 80Â’s. The Xbox 360, being an external drive, can adopt the dominant format, whereas the PS3 will be stuck using only blue-ray (although there is no reason the PS3 could not use its USB ports for an external drive)

Shouldn't it say Blu-Ray, not Blue-Ray?

No, the worst case is both failing, like DVD-Audio and SACD.

What would be funny is if they came out with a player that plays both formats blu-ray and hd-dvd.

What happened to that Holographic Video Disc thing, it could hold like 1 terabite of info or something couldn't it? Why aren't any companies going with that, it's seems better than both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray?
And anon at 1:36 PM, you're an idiot, trust me, if you were Microsoft and you had the chance to switch to whatever format was winning, you would.

Anon at 1:36 PM, the business world is not about sticking by what you say, it's about making money, I know if I was Microsoft and could switch to the winning format, I would, as would any other sane person.

I just realized how many companies support Blu Ray and HD DVD. Could this end up like the DVD+R and DVD-R issue, or are these two technologies too different to both survive?
Reply
annon @ 2:32 --> they have a chip already that can do both
blu-ray already one won the only thing hd-dvd can do is delay the inevitable...(opinion)
BMJ --> with players that can play both the possibility is there

That format is barely into the development phase, it'll be many many years before that tech nology is ready. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray will be out by the end of this year.

HVD is going to be ready at the end of 2006. its a possibility as a contendor.
except that its not.
1tb of data sounds good. but each disc costs $100, which would put games in the $140 range.
i dont think developers would even USE 1tb of data. much less this 25gb that blu-ray is offering. its most likely that games that use Blu-Ray will have 15gb of Music and Videos, not actual gameplay.

Why does everyone keep saying that games will use Blu-Ray??? Hasn't Sony stated that they are still using DVD9 for game and Blu-Ray is for HD Movies only..?? Please correct me if I am wrong...

They have stated no such thing, and why would they go with blu-ray for movies only? Im sure a lot if not all first gen games will be on a dvd just like most/all games for ps2 were on a cd.

responding to the last Anon, no sony says both movies and games will be in blu-ray for the ps3. MS says that dvd9 will be the format for games in Xbox360. and it should be enough, the way the 360 archiving system works in compressed packages is really tight (think winrar serial packaging) in such a way that the machine can uncompress and read the data on the fly given that all that happens not only at a daunting speed, it happens in a very efficient way. this way if you have ever packaged a winrar package in the serial mini packages way, you already know this compress to HALF the file weight if it were uncompressed. this means that considering the lead in/lead out in a dvd 9 for this type of thing goes from 100mb to 300mb each, well, even then it means than those 9 gigabytes they have around count actually as 15-17 gigs of space if they were burned for the xbox-one...so there you have it. this is why there was not a problem to fil oblivion in one disc of dvd 9.
but i can guess that the 3-4 dvd controversy for that game came from someone who saw how much it wieghted in it´s raw form while bethesda were in the development of the game.
you don´t have to belive anything of this. but i think i would share anyway.

HVD = expensive and unnecissarily large disc space. The cost of producing enough high definition movie to even come close to filling such a disc is beyond what they'd sell at (and we are way off ever having Ultra High Definition sets, at rediculous data rates and such)
Besides, theres a data integrity issue with the method used with these discs that hasnt been fixed yet i do believe.

BD-R IS being used for games by PS3. Microsoft, however, will not use next gen discs for games.

Its Holographic Versatile Disc...
And it seems Microsoft seems uncertain of the formatt wars themselves, saying it's a possibility to support both.

Does anyone know how much the
HD-DVD drive will be? I'm assuming it'll be far less than a PS3 (which will be $400). I won't buy it no matter the cost cuz I'm getting PS3, I'd just hope it wouldn't be over $200 or it won't sell well.

I like how it says the ps3 is "stuck" with a blu-ray drive like its a bad thing
well the 360 is "stuck" with a dvd drive for its games!
if they divide the market so bad as to develope games that are on either format and you need to buy a external drive just to play the game they will be very stupid, can you say ps2 and the hard drive addon, yeah that went over well...

I have been expecting MS to say this ever since they announced the HD-DvD external drive. MS has nothing to lose by supporting both and everything to gain.
The reason a lot of people thought it would never happen is because MS and Sony are rivals in the console industry, however you see MS is not such a blind fanboy of their own product and anti any other product to know that they want money above all else.
Sony in fact is the same way, you will notice that if you buy a Sony VAIO computer it comes with...Windows installed on it. Why does Sony do this when they are bitter rivals with MS? Easy, it will make them more money.
