Microsoft has issued an Xbox Live status advisory today, advising players of Modern Warfare 2 to be wary of phishing attempts when playing the game online.

The alert comes on the heels of the recent PlayStation Network breach  that exposed personal information for potentially more than 77 million of its users. The post reads...

“Users may experience difficulties with the following services:

  • Users may receive potential phishing attempts via title specific messaging while playing Modern Warfare 2.

We are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience”

Phishing is a term coined by hackers in which users are lured to reveal their personal info. This is typically carried out by fake e-mails, websites or instant messaging that looks almost identical to the legitimate one, which then attempts to gather personal and financial information such as usernames, passwords and even credit card numbers from recipients.
