Major video game publishers Electronic Arts and Activision have slammed the sales figures released by retail sales tracker NPD Group after the latter released data pointing to an 8% decline in software sales for the month of February. According to them, the NPD's numbers can prove misleading since it doesn't take into account any software sold through digital outlets.

"Using NPD data for video game sales is like measuring music sales and ignoring something called iTunes," said EA corporate communications executive Tiffany Steckler. "We see NPD's data as a misrepresentation of the entire industry."

CNN reports that the publishers went on to say that NPD figures are becoming ptentially irrelevant. Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, however, thinks this is a "gross overstatement."

"EA saying physical game sales don't matter is like Best Buy saying television sales don't matter," he said. Pachter further added that a significant portion of "digital-only" sales still require the purchase of a physical game.

Other analysts, like Sterne Agee's Arvind Bhatia, seem to agree that digital sales do have a significant impact on publishe sales. "The growth part of the business is non-retail sales," he said.

Of course, if the data is in their favor they won't hesitate to use it to advertise their games. :D

EA never said physical sales "don't matter," they said the data being reported is irrelevant if you're not taking digital sales into account as well. Sheesh. I hate Michael Pachter.

well considering almost every new pc game made by ea sold @ retail has a free digital copy its like saying that every pc manufacture just uses the onboard video card which isnt entirely true for more expensive desktops

Yeah it's true until NPD set up the infrastructure to deal with the major digital distributors their figures will become about as relevant as the music charts are now, i mean i haven't give a s#it what's at number 1 for getting on a decade now.

Leave it to patcher (yes its spelled wrong on purpose) to turn the quote around and defend something completely opposite of what was said.

EA said digital content isn't counted and that digital content is a big thing. Their itunes comparison works perfectly.

Yet Patcher thinks they're talking of DLC and claiming physical sales don't matter? Dude needs to stop drinking.

NPD also "guesses" at POS purchases. For example, Walmart orders 10,000 units of something and they assume that since walmart typically posts a new PO at 10% of stock left then they must have sold 9000 units. Except, that's not always the case.

NPD numbers are good to see what the stores have bought however they do NOT know what the customers have purchased.

Walmart is awesome about relaying POS information. However companies like Best Buy are dead set AGAINST it. So it would be impossible for anyone to know that information.

OMG Activision needs to shut up, over 20m in sales for black ops in just 5 months and they are complaining sales are starting to decline? I guess they have to maintain their evil persona. They make microsoft look like first class citzens.
