id Software's Tim Willits explains Rage's multiplayer modes.

"Yes, Rage has a unique multiplayer experience that is not your standard on-foot deathmatch, which is something that we invented," said Willits.

"We wanted Rage to stand apart, stand by itself. We didn't want to follow the same cookie cutter formula that everybody else is doing. Instead we wanted to use our imagination and break away from that mode," he continued. "We feel the vehicle aspect of it is a lot of fun to drive, to shoot guys, to fight so we wanted to let people do that with their friends."

"You know, everyone likes to shoot things with their friends so we have the co-op element in Rage as well. We feel that it [Rage] has a very strong offering and that it's ok to do something different, since we actually invented it [deathmatch]."

John Carmack is extremely frustrated with console weakness.

Tim is bad ass. He literally sat me down and taught me TCP/IP when I showed up at the id corporate office to bitch about them removing dial up play from Quake.

Oh come on, you can't invent deathmatch, sure, they may have been the first to do it, but the step from single player games to multiplayer games made it a pretty goddamn obvious choice.

Dude, id did indeed invent deathmatch as we know it. If someone else tried it just wouldn't have been the same. It's only an obvious choice because that's what you've been used to.
