Writing on his blog, he noted, "Here's the thing about doing a game that's all about cover; a game that's not a run and gun. It changes your perception about other games and movies. All of your standard pre-learned thoughts about what it means to sling lead at your enemy must be re-worked.
" It's kind of like the first time you play paintball - a sport that I, for one, shall never, ever play again. Why? Because it hurts. Paintball hurts for a reason. Why? Because otherwise there would be no real game of gunplay.
"Current shooters are the fire-fight equivalent of a water pistol battle - there's really no fear of death. You know, two buxom college girls in white bikinis with super soakers, laughing, dancing around in a circle, acting like they don't want to be sprayed but truth be told it's hot - very hot - in the Carolina summer and they really do want to be drenched…
" Flash back to paintball. Hardcore para-military nuts who get up at the ass crack of dawn on a Saturday morning to dress in full camo and go out and hurt one another. If you've ever been shot at - and hit - by a paintball you know how much it stings. Especially when they've been chilled."
He says he's enjoying the challenge of working on a new franchise, free from the expectations of a fanbase. "I don't have to worry about an installed base of rabid fans... yet. Hopefully that'll be a concern I have somewhere down the line! Since Gears of War is a brand, spanking new franchise I can write whatever rules I want. I can put a gun that shoots baby kittens at communist children and fans of the series won't yell at me and say 'Hey! We wanted the gun that shot purple slugs at capitalist superheroes!'
"It's freeing and scary at the same time - kind of like going into public without wearing any underwear, really."

paintball isnt that bad, ive played for years and have only had a few where i really went ow, that hurt, the other hundreds i just shrugged off as an inconvinience causing me the end of that round. anyway, my idea for a game that gives you motivation to not get hit is simple. you knwo those little shock pens from 7-11 that sting your finger a bit when you click em? wire one into the controller, with 2 points. your hand has to be across both of them to complete the circuit and let the controller work. you get hit, it shocks your hand, but you need to fight it in order to shoot back. get hit somewhere important, itll throb. jump from too high, same thing. having 2 small prongs on one sid eof the controller ensures all it does is jump across your palm giving you a nice jolt, not going across your chest and killing you(like if there was one in each hand) . if you do this you will eb a god in the gaming world for the first game that gave you an incentive to not be hit.
