Ex-SAS soldier Andy McNab thinks that the emotions felt during a Battlefield 3 playthrough are the same things felt during real war.

"On the battlefield everybody who's normal is scared - anybody who says they aren't is lying," said McNab. "So that brings everything down to a more realistic level in that real context."

"That emotion is still there when you're playing the game. If these guys (DICE) get it right everybody becomes emotionally involved. A player doesn't want to fuck up, they want to get to the next level, and the emotion of wanting to progress is the same emotion as people in the battlefield," he continued. "We're all human. We all have emotions but they come out at different levels and with different motivations. A gamer will be as much into it as somebody on the battlefield, only in a different way. There's no illusion that he's on the battlefield; he's not wet, cold and hungry, he's at home being entertained. But the emotions are the same. The heartbeats are up."

McNab is also co-writing a Battlefield 3 novel, titled Battlefield: The Russian.

This is a very interesting article. I have a grandfather who is one of those rare old gamers. But he wont play realistic shooters for the same reason. He says it gets too intense and reminds him of how felt when he was in Korea. So I'd say there is some definite credibility in this article.

Maybe it makes those feelings come back to you, but they don't create the same feelings.
People that play games have no idea what it's like in actual action.

Just behind it as saying, "Playing 2K makes me know exactly how professional baseball players feel when they're up to bat."

"Emotions felt while playing BF3 are the same as real war"

oh yeah, it's just the same. I always feel like i am going to lose an arm or leg while playing a video game safely on my couch.

I'm sure he knows he's talking complete crap, but just shows what price it takes for a game publisher to turn someone into a puppet just spouting whatever opinions you feed into them, luckily though he wrote my favourite book, Bravo Two Zero so he's not all bad.

Complete bullshit.

Do you fear for you life while playing the game? No.

Do you have to kill someone or see them actually being killed for real? Nope.

The emotions are not as effective as they'd be in real life.
