Pre-Owned games aren't good for the industry, I'm pretty sure more or less is the comment you'll get from a developer here and there but some internal documents obtained by Kotaku and spread around to a few other gaming websites - have started to talk about the stand-alone preowned section to be mixed with used and new copies at EB Games in Canada.

One thing I didn't know was that EB Games in Canada is actually owned by GameStop, and it seems, someone up top thought it'd be a good idea to mix the new and pre-owned games section together and the average consumer will be none-the-wiser, as the prices for used copies will be the same as new copies and stickers will be removed.

While this might not be a big deal for people who just want a copy of the game, or they know a game didn't come out this year and are looking for an old (out of print) copy.  I do have to say this will become a problem, especially in the next few weeks as good old grandma and grandpa who have enough to do in their seventy year old life, to make their snobbish, jerky, grandkids love them and end up spending a large sum of cash on something that probably isn't even the right thing...my heart, honestly, bleeds for them.

EB has yet to comment on these "internal documents" but someone claiming to be an employee also contacted Kotaku saying they "were told that we were to merge all used games with the new games and have them sectioned off by one of four specific genres they gave us," and were even told that new copies must be on the bottom of the pile and the used copies were to be "stacked on the top", as well as getting rid of any advertising material saying it was used.

Going back to my original point with GameStop, this may be a corporate take over in Canada and the scrapping of the EB Games title and just spewing forth with GameStop, by getting rid of EB Promotional Material...but the occums razor here is simply that they are trying to screw gamers over with claiming used titles are new titles...time will tell.

funny thing is when they started to redirect us to gs.ca @ end of last year they now are transfering us to eb.com considering gs stores dont do nearly as well as eb stores here in canada not many gs stores have been built or changed to gs

I'm not familiar with consumer laws in Canada but here in the states, there is a mandating law that doesn't allow for purchased and returned item to be resold as new. The retailer has to label the item as used if its being resold.

Maybe the retailer would sell the used item for the price as a new but who would really buy it for that price? lmao!

I don't see this happening here unless if the gamestop corporate suits are on crack.

I live in Winnipeg, which is in Canada. As of last year, every Winnipeg location has limited trade ins to one per customer. And you can only use one game when trading. So you can't bring in multipal games, and trade them for a game. We are the only place in Canada that does this. Now that they want to try and rip everyone off by labeling used games as new, I'm done with them. I hope everyone shares this view, and these idiots running the stores either retract these stupid new rules, or close all the franchises. This will completely increase piracy. What are they thinking?

EB Games got bought by Gamestop -YEARS- ago.

This is just another drop in the bucket for Gamestop's terrible, customer unfriendly polices.

It's just another reason for me never to shop there again.

Here's a fun fact for you Americans, EBgames in the phone book is listed as Electronic Boutique, how the F am I suppost to know thats what the store is called?? There is no trace of an Electronic Boutique slogan or logo within the store or on the receipt, except maybe some fine print but who reads that? Back in the Ps2 days it was a hot spot, now its 99% bullcrap. Just walk in and compare or find the game used before u trade in.

Hmm they want $34 for bad company 2 preownd, hands it to the guy, here I'll give you $3 for it, oh wait theres a scratch, -$2, your gonna give me a buck for it? go fuck yourself. The pawn shop will give u more.

I never knew they legally changed. I figured they just used EB for short like KFC and IHOP......I must be hungry :D

Anywho, used games bad for business? BS. Used games have been around since day 1. It was called selling a game to your friend. Or hell, simply GIVING the game away after you were done. Then of course there's the always fun, finding 50+ games at a garage sale and going NUTS.

WTF...
Guess no one is going to EBGames anymore. What is the point if they do this. People will just go to Best Buy or Futureshop. Its not like Eb Games offers good deals.

it would be illegal to not advertise that something is used, plus, what about the online passes? you just gamble and wish you are lucky that you get a new one? non sense.

Fix your article title, it's highly misleading. (Like, 'News Limited Misleading').

They aren't dropping used games, they are no longer using the yellow price tags they normally use for them. They will still say 'used" on the price tag. Read the source material closer before posting.

i guess the only reason why this is happening is their now taking tradeins for as they put it iDEVICES(iPod iPhone iPad) except they dont mention anything about aftermarket accessories like was mentioned in a prevous article.

as it is though most locations are cramped for space. thats one thing the gs locations do better is they arnt full stores(they dont carry everything)

All I wanna know is this, will they be giving more money for the trade ins???
When I purchase games I check multiple store prices before walking into eb because lets face it, they love to rip you off. Trade in something for $3 and the resale is 10x that. No Thanks I'll keep it.

I just picked up the new Zelda Skyward Sword today for $39 at wal-mart, EB wanted the full price of $49. I called EB about picking up a 3 month sub for xbox gold also, sorry we only have 1 year subscriptions.. I think it was just last fall they gave me the same story. Sorry I don't wanna give you all the money in my wallet right now.

"Don't Spend it all in one Place *cough* EB"

how the hell can people NOT tell they are getting a used game? Half the time, the copies that people trade in are so beaten to crap that you could not in any right frame of mind think that it was new.

It still amazes me that:
A. People actually trade in just the game, no case or manual (what the hell did you do with it in the first place? How hard is it to keep your shit together in one place?)
B. That they continue to buy games with no case/manual.

Every time I take in games to sell the guy behind the counter looks at me and either asks:

1. Where did you steal these from?

2. Did you even play these?

But yeah, most games are nothing more then the cartridge or disc. They usually throw the box away if it's wrecked.
