Double Fine Founder Says Patching Console Games is Too Damned Expensive |
Listed in: News Tags: brutal legend, costume quest, double fine, EA, kickstarter, tim schafer

Double Fine founder Tim Schafer has been in the news a lot lately with his Kickstarter thing and the news about a possible Psychonauts sequel floating around, and now he's laid bare the cost behind patching some of our favorite buggy-ass games.
When it comes to Xbox Live and the SEN (sigh...), Schafer says that while they are great systems, they are "closed," meaning that the developers have to jump through so many hoops to patch their game that it's almost not worth it to them. He also says that the $40,000 price tag on patches for games on those systems is cost prohibitive to independent developers. He says that open systems like Steam are "where it's at."
So this helps explain some past issues that Double Fine has had. Namely, Costume Quest and Brutal Legend for the PS3. Though Schafer said a year ago that DF didn't have the manpower to patch Costume Quest, one would have to assume that cost was a factor. Such was plainly the case for Brutal Legend. EA came right out and said that they wouldn't help pay for a patch because the game didn't sell all that well.

That being said, some games will become masterpieces through the new business model since they get millions of testers over time.
