Dead Space 3 Producer Talks Microtransactions |
Listed in: News Tags: dead space 3, EA, Visceral Games

Dead Space 3's microtransactions have pissed off a lot of the fans out there, but producer John Calhoun has his own ideas about it. He says we're just a bunch of old curmudgeons and need to get over it...essentially.
"There's a lot of players out there, especially players coming from mobile games, who are accustomed to microtransactions," Calhoun said. "They're like, 'I need this now. I want this now.' They need instant gratification."
So Calhoun says that's who the microtransactions are there for.
"There are action game fans, and survival horror game fans, who are 19 and 20, and they've only played games on their smartphones, and microtransactions are to them a standard part of gaming. It's a different generation."
So the microtransactions are there for new, young fans that may or may not even play the game and if they even do they may or may not partake of the microtransactions and us old farts just need to get over it.
All right, then.

Well anyway here's my short list of disappointments about DS3:
1. Forced co-op? - Yes I know it's not literally FORCED, but they've basically turned round and said "oh yeh, all you guys who still play single player games need to get with the times, or miss out on half the story". This makes me worry about the plot for this game. It sounds like the plot is going to be so vacuous that you'll need to play it with a friend just to get any entertainment factor from the game.
2. No extended graphical options for the PC version - You're just spitting in the faces of people who pay quite a bit of money above and beyond console gamers almost entirely in some cases to achieve the best graphical performance they can get. And why? So you don't get a better experience than those playing on a console... Pathetic. Sounds more like a badly made game, or just plain laziness. And a 'port' at that. Woo-hoo! Every PC gamer just loves to hear that word.
3. Micro transactions! - The bane of my gaming life these days. I am sick to death of day 1 DLCs, MTs and Special Edition packs with an extra gun and costume. Are you really telling me that the absolute best business model the gaming industry can come up with is that garbage. It probably does bring in the money, no doubt, but frankly it's the QVC (cheap and tacky shopping channel on UK TV) of the games market. And what's that Calhoun? It's a new generation? Get with the times? I'm 24... not an OAP.
The dev news on DS3 has largely sounded like big company execs getting too big for their boots. They're clearly interested in making money more than they're interested producing something that fans of the series so far will get to enjoy. Thank god they dropped the competitive multiplayer. I'm sick to death of that too. The last game I actually played equal amounts of MP and SP was The Lost World on the Megadrive/Genesis. If these companies spent half time they spent creating an MP element into the SP mode (or vice versa) we would have far more games contending for the game of the year awards.
Oh, and Square-Enix, please update or remake Vagrant Story!!

I don't care how good the game is otherwise (or what game it is, for that matter). Microtransactio ns in a full priced game is nothing less than a ripp-off and tells me that EA thinks their customers are stupid. And seriously, anyone who buys in-game items you get anyway, is stupid.
