38 Studios, the development studio owned by former Major League Baseball pitcher Curt Schilling, apparently borrowed a whole lot of money to get their flagship title Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning made. And now they owe $1.25 million that they don't have to the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation. The payment is overdue and 38 Studios' staff of 300+ people didn't get paid this week.

Uh-oh.

Sources close to Joystiq also say that 38 Studios has laid off all temporary and contract workers as well. 38's last financial report stated that they had 379 full-time employees and 34 contractors and 8 interns. It's check to the RIEDC also bounced recently due to insufficient funds. Double uh-oh.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was roundly praised and sold fairly well (400,000 copies), but it looks like 38 Studios is in serious trouble.

well the studio can always merge or sell to a bigger company to be bought off out of debit, i wonder if there is any company thou, with the economy and junk, and it was such a nice little game, i also wonder if they wore doing anymore projects, to bad a lot of people loosing their jobs and not getting paid, hopefully things turns out good for everyone..apart form that when he wanted to open the studio here in the east coast he was struggling to get any state aproval...
