CryEngine 3 rearing to get on board Xbox 720? |
Listed in: News, Rumors Tags: cryengine, Crytek, Microsoft
The rumors stirred to life when Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli said, "We are expanding in many ways, and some of that is more announced than others. Kinect is major driver for future platforms as well, so Kinect support is important. Having basic Kinect support in the CryEngine is one thing, but I'm talking about really supporting it deeply. CryEngine is going to have deep [Kinect] support."

Okay, that's settled there. Crytek will be going all out on their support for Microsoft's Kinect. But where does the Xbox 720 bit comes in? Apparently, an insider source claimed that "a high-ranking industry source at Crytek, who stated that TimeSplitters 4 is currently being demonstrated internally, is being built with CryEngine 3, and was being shown privately in video form at E3 2011." The thing is, simultaneous to this, Crytek is quoted to have said that they believe that both the TimeSplitters game and the CryEngine 3 itself, "will be the cornerstone of next-generation development."
Nintendo's started the ball rolling on the "next-gen" with the Wii U, and with Crytek already looking forward with Kinect, it should be logical to conclude that they're already setting their sights on further deepening their relationship with Microsoft's Kinect through their next-gen console, which is assumed to be Xbox 720.
Again, it's a theory at best at this point, but it really isn't all too farfetched if you do think about it. Rumors have been pretty consistent about the existence of said Xbox 720, with many people expecting it to be revealed at this year's E3. No such thing happened, of course, but analysts continue to believe that a 2012 retail debut is highly possible.
