Bungie Says Xbox Live Would Be Dead Without Halo

While Bungie may not exactly be at the helm of the Halo franchise anymore, that hasn't stopped the company from being quite vocal about their position in the gaming industry. As Microsoft gears up to celebrate the tenth anniversary of its online gaming network known as Xbox Live, the former Halo designers had quite a few interesting words to say about how they helped to maintain the service's success.

In quite a bold  move, Bungie Studio manager Harold Ryan went on record to say that the approach they took with Halo 2's online play completely changed the way that developer's made use of internet capability. According to them, they were the first team to really take that great multiplayer experience and work to integrate it with the service itself. In their own words, "Systems for groups and matchmaking and skill ranking were all things that were pushed the furthest and the hardest by us.”

However, maybe what was more interesting is the words made before that statement. To open the conversation, Ryan went even further by admitting ""I think Xbox Live wouldn't have made it. I don't think the Xbox would be where it is today without Bungie and without Halo." Certainly this idea does hold some water considering Halo is without question Xbox's most popular exclusive, but can it really account for all forty million members that reside on the service today? According to reports published in March, Microsoft said that gamers actually spent more time logged into entertainment services like Netflix and ESPN than they did playing games, so can one single franchise be enough to carry an entire platform? Guess they don't know who Epic Games are or what Gears of War is.

Good point. Gears of War, which came out for the Xbox 360 in 2007, totally made Xbox Live work when it launched in 2002 on the original Xbox.

Yeah, I agree, Halo isn't what helped shape Xbox Live into what it is, and it is not what gave rise to it's focus on chatting, friends, and such; Gears of War was.

I'll have to agree at least on my end. Back in the day, the ONLY reason I paid for my Xbox Live subscription was to play Halo 2. There was a couple other games that were going to benefit but it was primarily that game.

i would be inclined to agree to be honest but thats not to say a diffrent francise wouldnt have stepped into the void instead lets face it the whole concept was just taken from pc games so its not like they invented online multiplayer but that being said i remeber lots of my friends joining live JUST for halo which obviously helped the service grow initially but it would have been a matter of time anyway they mearly struck the match first

Anyone who said halo DIDN'T help was either too young to even notice what was going on or straight up have no idea wtf they're talking about. Yea gears and cod have a huge amount of ppl playing today but did you know that back when Xbox live was for the Xbox, not xbox360, Xbox.. The first game to really set up a competitive multiplayer using Xbox live was halo2? In fact, it was the first game to have matchmaking for players based on skill levels, multi playlists, a ranked and non ranked system and gamers of all ages hooked into trying to beat one another senseless. Then halo 3 came out and once again innovated the scene with its veto system, map choice, map and player customizations, and community playlists like swat/zombie etc. every game prior to that based they're games on halo's multiplayer and made it their own but with halo2's and then halo3's ideas. Gamers nowadays have no idea what happened back in the day except that cod is the now... (it's an easy game, who doesn't like a game that's easy to play?) bungie is 1000% right when they say xbl wouldn't e where it's at if it weren't for them. The halo franchise has an amazing storyline, fun & competitive, and was unique to its ways, I'm sure back in the days no one was playing anything else. Call of duty 2 was out using those times, who the fxk remembers playing that for countless hours? 8)

This is actually all very true. The only part I would still say is overblown a bit is saying that it would eb nothing. I feel like some other FPS maybe even CoD would have integrated similar features through simple evolution. Halo 2 was the first though, so that you can't argue.

It is arrogant. I would say that Halo certainly helped, but to make those kinds of statements is really a but much. As a lot of you have said, Gears of War is just another of many that helped as well.

The only reason I ever got an ORIGINAL XBox is because I won Halo 2 off of a radio station. Before that, I never thought I'd be paying $50 a year to play a game online. And for CoD? Back in those days, it was just another WWII game. Medal of honor was better. Bungie IS the only reason XBox exists today. The PS2 pwnd until Halo came along.

the thing is Halo is not that good of a game, people play online but the story is just bad and I have no idea why its so loved. don't get me wrong I have played them all up to and including Halo 3 and I just never really enjoyed online or in single player.
