BioWare CEO Ray Muzyka recently spoke to Kotaku and divulged some of the details about what they've improved in the gameplay department in Mass Effect 3. He talked about the balance between action and role playing, the planet mining mini-game, and the new "galactic readiness" aspect of the game.

He said that they recognized that ME1 was more RPG and ME2 was more shooter, but said that this one is a little of both. Many hardcore RPGers were turned off by ME2's focus on action, but I enjoyed not having to pore through a bazillion different guns to get extra little bonuses here and there like I did in ME1. Just give me a few to pick from to fit my playstyle and let me go. Speaking of weapons, you will be able to customize them at weapon benches.

Muzyk said that decision making in Mass Effect 3 will be "decision making with a capital D," meaning that every decision you make will have ripples throughout the game. He also said they refined the planet mining game. They removed the probe cap, for one thing, so you don't have to keep going back to buy more. Another thing worth noting is that in this game the Reapers are out there. If you get their attention while you're out there scanning planets for resources and away team missions you may get their attention and have to fight for your life. It's not clear how this will play out, but there is an achievement/trophy for escaping a Reaper on the galaxy map, for what it's worth.

Galactic readiness is a new aspect in the game and it's all about trying to bring the galaxy's divergent races together to fight the Reapers. This will somehow tie into the co-op multiplayer, though it won't be necessary for you to play MP to be galactically ready. Basically you'll be talking to Admiral Anderson about what faction you need to shore up and then how you can go about it.

I know from the demo that the MP maps are placed in certain spots in the galaxy so maybe it will be something like, "Krogan support is waning" or something, and then you can play a multiplayer game in that sector to build Krogan support. If that is this case, it sounds pretty damn cool to me. Of course, people that don't want to play MP should have other options to build support, and it sounds like they will.

As a side note, those six Mass Effect 3: Space Editions are coming down tomorrow. Check out the video below for details.

The game will be out on March 6th.
