If you picked up Dishonored for Xbox 360 yesterday, you probably noticed the message that recommended installing the game to your hard drive for an “optimal” experience. You probably also noticed that this optional install landed at a whopping 5 gigs. Bummer.

I can’t speak for the PS3 copy since I don’t own it, but Internet rumors indicate it also has a 5 gig install, only the PS3 one is mandatory. Let us know if that’s not right and I’ll update the post.

I’m not exactly sure what the install is for, but I think it has something to do with load times. It’s not a texture pack from what I can tell (I’m playing the Xbox version and don’t see any difference after install). It’s definitely not something we knew was coming, and we’re already starting to see forum complaints and whatnot from gamers that didn’t necessarily know they’d need so much free space.

But hey, it’s a sign of the times: Halo 4’s multiplayer alone will need an 8 GB install, and it was pretty recently that RAGE demanded over 20. Time for a new generation.
