A Female Protagonist in Gears of War? Don't Count on it |

Gears of War 3 offered up some playable female characters, so does that mean that we could actually see one take the lead role in an upcoming release from the series? Don’t count on it.

Chris Perna, art director at Epic Games, told OXM that having a female protagonist in a Gears of War title would be unlikely. Why? Because it would affect the series’ image and hurt sales. “That's certainly interesting but I don't know," he said. "If you look at what sells, it's tough to justify something like that.”
So, while you probably won’t see a female Gears of War protagonist in the future, Perna did say that female gamers have enjoyed how such characters were portrayed by Epic and have put that on display in cosplay events. “They feel empowered," said Perna. "They put on that armor and they walk around with these massive weapons and I think they get a kick out of it; I get a kick out of seeing it.”
He continued: “From what we've heard, when they play the game they feel empowered and they feel good. Some of the feedback I've heard from women that I talk to is that if we'd made these women more feminine and more stereotypical it wouldn't have been so nice.”
Gears of War: Judgment will be released exclusively for the Xbox 360 on March 19th.
