360-datel-hdd2Popular online retailer, Lik-Sang, has gotten their hands on the new 4GB USB hard drive for the Xbox 360. From the sounds of it, they were not impressed at all, stating “the coolest thing about it is probably the greenish power button drawing on the top of the product”. Check out this excerpt from their review:

One thing is for sure, if you are waiting for a third-party HDD for your core Xbox 360 system because you are pissed at both the high price and low availability of the official Microsoft unit... well, this is not yet what you have been begging for. This new device is connected to the 360 via the USB connection, same as any other portable PC hard drives or USB drives would be, and it does not offer the same range of options as the official HDD does (no game saves, no going online, only media files transfer).

It also offers only 4GB of space, same as the very popular HDD that these guys just outted for the PSP. In fact, it uses the360-datel-hdd6 same Magicstor 4 gigs microdrives inside. From our point of view, the coolest thing about it is probably the greenish power button drawing on the top of the product. Or arguably the fact that a green glowin' light comes out of the USB connector when you slot it in your console [wow].

These aren't even meant for that at all? How can lik-sang go "OMG its not the same as the 360 hard drive?!" and base the review on that.

You can't frikkin go "ZOMG this car doesn't fly!" And write a review on how it sucks cuz it can't fly. No crap it can't fly, its a car.

No crap this thing can't save games, no crap you can't go online.

So, how about a "No this isn't gonna replace the hard drive needed or memory card, but yes it awesome for what it is."

You can buy the 20gig HDD for the 360 for 100bucks when this thing is 140..isn't it?

But the only thing you can store on it is music and pictures, therefore its a waste of money.

Why buy this when you could just network the 360 with your PC and have all the storage space on your PC to use for the same things. I have over 20gigs of mp3s I stream from my PC for custom soundtracks.

You don't need WMCE to stream music to your 360, you can use Windows XP to do that, this thing seems like a waste of money, i am just hoping it is not long before someone releases an 80GB (160GB perhaps) replacement for the internal HDD.

Media center edition is only needed for movie streaming. Music and pictures (which is all this usb drive can really do) can be streamed from PCs using regular windows xp.
