DO NOT CHANGE THE POSITION OF YOUR XBOX 360 WHILE IT IS ON WITH A DISC IN THE DRIVE OR YOU RISK POTENTIALLY DAMAGING YOUR GAME DISC.

A growing number of Xbox 360 customers are reporting having problems with their disc's getting scratched by the DVD drive when switching the unit's position from vertical to horizontal and vise versa..  Initially we thought this was the usual fanboy vs. hater propaganda that swirls around the launch of any new console like this.  It didn't take long until the seriousness of the situation reared it ugly head right here in the Llamma's shop.  I personally have experienced this issue not once but twice already.  Here I was at a friends house helping him get this 360 all setup and networked for Live.  In the process we decided to lay the Xbox on it side instead of the upright position.. I thought nothing of doing this while the unit was powered up and in the middle of a game.  Big Mistake!  I felt and heard the scratch happen and immediately thought; uh oh.. I think I just ruined your Call of Duty 2 buddy... sorry!  You would have figured I learned my lesson and would be more careful next time I attempted something like that.  Yeah.. guess not.  Later on back at the Llamma shop I was taking some photos of a 360 when I decided to get a horizontal shot, again it was powered up so I made sure to do it more carefully.  I guess that I was not careful enough because I got that distinct vibration and scratch noise again.  There was no doubt in my mind what had just happened.  I ejected the disc just to see that it was scratched like the first disc in a almost identical fashion.  It will prove interesting to see if the reported Microsoft response is true or stands about replacement of the damaged game disks.  Here at Llamma we just wanted to know why it was happening.

We started by disassembling of our one of our Hitachi-LG GDR-3120L DVD drives, which happens to be the only drive in any of our 360's.  Upon inspecting the laser assembly it was obvious there was only one small area that could have caused this.  I applied some silver sharpie marker over the entire black laser assembly housing and reassembled the drive.  I threw in the Quake 4 bonus disk and waited for the small jet to take off.  After the disc spun up I went through the tilting motion a few times.  Video(1.5MB): How to scratch a disc with an Xbox 360.  We then disassembled the drive to find what was causing the scratches.  The following photo shows exactly where the problem occurs.  As you can see the black showing through the silver area that was painted.

Microsoft does in fact say the following in the Volume 1: Setup manual that ships with the Xbox 360:

"IMPORTANT
To avoid jamming the DVD drive and damaging discs or the Xbox 360 console:

  • Remove discs before moving the console or tilting it between the horizontal and vertical positions.
  • Never use cracked discs.  They can shatter inside the console and jam or break internal parts.
  • When the console is vertical do not use discs that are smaller the standard DVDs and CDs."

I wonder how many of us 360 owners read our manuals..lol.  I guess this is a good example to do so in the future; not that it would have sunk in.  I had games to play not read and learn important documentation about "the most exciting product on the planet!"

Though we are warned of the problem it is still a surprise how easy it can happen.  It does not take much effort to ruin one of your games by doing this. Here's a 1.5MB video clip of how easy and dramatic it is.  Some feel its common sense to not move it while its running.. other probably don't know any better.  I should have known better myself but I thought a little movement wouldn't be that dramatic.

Those of us that have experienced the problem will have to pray to have our discs replaced.  I'm sure we will all know Microsoft official stance on disc replacement soon.  The good news is that if you don't move the unit around while a disc is in the drive you will probably never have a problem.  I don't need a third strike to learn that I should not move the unit while it is powered on while a disc is in the drive.  It is cool to show off how the player indicator lights move with the position of the unit... just take your disc out first ;)

Surprised how easy it can happen? How ****ing dumb are you people. It says not to do it. Did you think they just put that in there to fill space. Damn. If it says do not play the Xbox 360 under water because it may damage your system, are you going to play it under water to see if they were lying?

something could accidently knock your xbox360 down or move it and you'd have an automatic broken disc. Plus I don't think the average person would know this as many people move electronics while they are on sometimes.

Well...i dont think anybody who got an xbox360 will take the time to read the whole manual, they would just want to rip it out of the box and start playing. I would probably be switching positions just to see the light change because i think thats a nice little touch. Why did they not change DVD drives, or did Microsoft even know about this.....

I had nor problems with Microsoft. They told me they would replace all my scratched discs (and not with PDZ, mind you). You just have to lie and say you didn't move it while it was on.

The official position is they aren't replacing the discs, it's the consumers fault not the design team. I called the xbox customer service and the girl went as far as to say it could have been designed that way to get the consumer to respect their xbox and take better care of it. WWHHAAA??? I've heard they would offer a free copy of Perfect Dark (no matter which game you scratched). Great deal MS. They need to at least put a warning sticker somewhere on the 360. I think the problem deserves a little more presence than one line buried in the manual.

For ****s sake! This is nothing new, anything that has a dvd tray rather than a flip top lid would do this.
Dont belive me? Try flipping a ps2/xbox/pc on its side when a disk is spinning and see what happens.

Funny thing is when G4Tech TV had a segment where the devolpers of 360's showed the making of it it showed them turing the 360 on its side to show it changed light positions while it was on....So by watching this is sys it is okay to flip so I am guessing they may not have know how easy it is scartch the CD...Good luck gettign replcements!

Think about it this way. A DVD disk is spinning between 570-1600 RPM, depending on where the laser is reading the data. This fast motion creates a lot of inertia. If you rotate the X360, the disk will want to remain in the same plane, thus causing it to become tilted in the drive and scratch against the lens assembly. This problem really isn't that rare. Try tilting your home DVD player while it's playing a movie and see what happens.

LOL
I dun get it
I flip my stuff all the tym
my pc, I have to plug in and out hdds, so I lean it on the sides while it's still on.
no scratch there.
PS2, I move it around coz it doesn't have its designated space, and my table is messy.
no scratch there.

my laptop, I tilt it and watch it coz I might be watching from my bed.
no scratch there.

well, I dunno.

it's like telling me to never touch my fridge after it's installed.
the gas inside it will surely mix up and break the damn thing if u shake it violently like it's your arch nemesis when it's on, but a shove or something shouldn't break all the bananas inside there.q

Even though it says in the owners manual, Not all scratches on game discs are caused by moving the XBOX while its spinning the disc.

There are still a lot of cases of the CD's getting scratched when its in the horizontal position.

A lot of players CAN and will scratch your CD if you tilt it while playing, my PS2 has scratched a few cd's when I tested that out. But the scratches aren't nearly as prominent as the 360 ones, And the 360 has been out for a whole week and a bit..

So this is a hardware issue nonetheless, and should be fixed in the next releases of XBOX's.

i'm so pissed. My 360 scratched the **** out of my cod2 disk. I have it in the vertical position and haven't moved it since i set it up. I put the game in, played for about a half hour then out of nowhere I started hearing a weird sound. I opened the tray and bam....disk scratched like crazy. This sucks I knew I should have just waited for this pos.

Remember people NEVER buy the first batch of anything. EVER. There is always defects and bugs to be worked out. I don't care how popular or hyped a product is just dont do it.

The PS2 does not have this problem, I have constantly moved my PS2 around while its on, Turned it vertically or horizontal and never had a disk scratched so bad that it wouldnt play.

Whenever i do all i get is a barely noticable ring on my disk and it plays perfectly.

The xbox360 is badly designed no matter how you try and reason it out. No next gen console should scratch a disk from minor movements.

What happens if you have your xbox vertical and trip over a controller wire. It will want to fall into a horizontal position depending on how hard and when the quick release disconnected the cord.

My computer can take much more hits then an xbox. When its burning, i can hit it move it around and still get a good burn.

But a console that has problems when you move it gently is a problem.

Screw the first xbox360 models. All you fools are gonna be sorry once new models are designed with less flaws.

Sony wont be as stupid and the quality they put into all their other equipment will be in the PS3.

Microsoft has very little experience when it comes to designing equipment. The xbox was proof of that and now again they proove that they are just as inexpierenced with the xbox360.

Maybe I'm just insane... but I've always avoided moving device that relys on disk based media (which isn't in an enclosed casing- like PSP) when it's in use. DUH. Common sense people. If your dumb enough to move it when it's running with a disk- then you deserved it. Heck, I hope your Xbox 360 crashes and burns.

tok they only put that **** in the manual just so they dont get sued over ****ed up discs. apparently micrsoft new what the problem was from the beggining but decided that it would cost too much money for em to fix, hey lets give the stupid fanboys a ****ed up console cause those dumbasses will still buy the dam thing and we get more money cause they will have to buy the game again and put more money in our pockets. IMAGINE THAT. if they were less scared they would have not rushed there product to market before sony and they might have just been even more successful.
cant yall fanboys see that microsoft dont care about their customers and that they never will, they never have. if they werent such dumbasses they would have been smart and delayed their launch, which they could have fixed the problem and shipped with more units.

Just sent my 360 in. Made my COD2 disc unplayable in only 3 weeks averaging maybe 30 minutes a day.

Never moved 360, was always horizontal.

the xbox 360 scratches my discs if i play it while in vertical position always that is my only problem. If i keep the 360 horizontal there is no scratches. My question is because of this problem are we as consumers entitiled to a refund as i am not happy over this.
