If wishes came true all the time I'd be filthy rich by now. Also, Fallout: New Vegas wouldn't be as buggy as it first came out. Speaking to Play magazine, Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart discussed the studio's reputation as a "buggy" developer. He concedes that there is some truth to it, but contends that gamers still find their "buggy" games enjoyable.

"I think it's fair and unfair at the same time, because in the same conversation that I hear how buggy KOTOR and Alpha Protocol were, I also hear how great they were," Urquhart said. "In the case of Fallout: New Vegas, we made a gigantic game, and I'm proud with what we were able to do but I wish it wasn't as glitchy when it came out.

"The criticisms people had are fair but it's difficult to get a game the size of New Vegas bug free. But that's an excuse and it doesn't matter when someone's paid US$ 60 for a game. It's something we need to work on."

Whether Obsidian will be able to leave that reputation behind will be evident when their new project, Dungeon Siege III, comes out. Some gamers may have felt that New Vegas never went through a QA process when it launched, so for Dungeon Siege III Obsidian is making sure to repeatedly check for and fix any bugs that they come across.

"From the standpoint of Dungeon Siege III, we've been working very hard to make sure it doesn't happen again. We've been playing and playing and playing and playing to ensure it's of a high standard. On top of this, this is the first time we've got to use our own technology on something, which means we know where to find the bad bugs from the start!"

Dungeon Siege III comes out this June on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

I still remember and am soured by the "bug" they had with the Fallout 3 GOTY edition.

Turns out that the save games you had from the Fallout 3 game would not transfer over to the GOTY edition if you had a non US copy of the game. (ie Canadian)

They EVENTUALLY fixed the error, MONTHS later and only when they were patching something else. LONG after I decided not to play their game anymore and moved on to something else. Really soured me on any of their games actually, not likely to pick up anymore until they have a large turn around in their QA process.

Fallout 3 was Bethesda, not Obsidian.

It's not the minor bugs or glitches that I particularly care about. For instance, when shrubbery is floating in the air or something seems off, mechanically, I can deal with it. It's when the game crashes repeatedly rendering it virtually unplayable (in the later stages of the game, no less) that it becomes less forgiving. I'm more than understanding of the minor bugs and glitches. But, it's ridiculous when, even six months post-release, I still can't play the game without at least 3 or 4 crashes in a 1hr session. I'm less incensed about paying the "US$60" for it and having it run like this; what is the most disappointing is that, in the case of Fallout 3 and New Vegas, they're very good games nearly ruined by poor build mechanics. That's the real shame. While having an interesting game-world that readily immerses the player should be striven for, it's no fucking good if they can't play the damn game.
