Epic Games isn't trying to set any records with the Gears of War 3 multiplayer beta, but they are aiming for about a million participants.

"I don't know if we necessarily have a target but our expectation is around the one million range - that's what we're thinking," executive producer Rod Fergusson told gaming news site CVG. "We're not trying to set any records, we're not trying to beat anybody for highest number of players on a beta. We're just trying to get enough data to help us make a better game."

Those who got access from buying Bulletstorm will be able to enter the beta on April 18th. Xbox 360 gamers who pre-ordered Gears of War 3, however, will have to wait a little bit longer and get in on the 25th. Either way, an Xbox Live Gold membership is needed to be able to access the beta.

The Gears of War 3 beta will feature three new game modes, four maps, and a host of playable models. Epic will be running the whole thing on dedicated servers.

"We're going to have dedicated servers around the world and it's going to be broadly available," explained Fergusson. "But as I said, for us it's about getting enough players playing enough matches over enough time that we can actually learn from it and make changes."
