The classic side-scrolling arcade game Double Dragon II: The Revenge is going down the remake route. Co-Optimus reports that Koren studio Barunson Interactive is currently working on a downloadable 3D reimagining of the arcade brawler for Xbox Love Arcade.

Originally released on arcade systems way back in 1988, Double Dragon II is the sequel to Double Dragon. Brothers Billy and Jimmy Lee once again take to the streets after Marian, the girl who was kidnapped in the original, is gunned down by the leader of a gang known as the Black Warriors. 

For the remake, Barunson is ditching the old subtitle and replacing it with Wander of the Dragons. The downloadable title will sport 3D visuals and an updated combo system. The cyclone kick will return along with the addition of a diving knee kick special attack. Aside from daling out punishment with their fists and legs, players will also be able to make use of a variety of weapons that can be picked up along the way.

Wander of the Dragons' two-player Story Mode will take its cue from the arcade game's four levels. Classic enemies will return, albeit with revamped character designs. There's also a new female enemy and a giant living statue. There are even a few quicktime events thrown in. The Versus Mode is getting beefed up with four-player multiplayer as well as more playable characters including Marian and a few enemy characters. There will also be a Survival Mode.

Double Dragon II: Wander of the Dragons is currently slated for a September release on XBLA. It'll set you back 1200 MS Points. The original is currently on the App Store.
