Alpha Protocol dev wants to make a sequel

Despite getting praise for its story, the Obsidian Entertainment-developed action RPG Alpha Protocol got lackluster reviews due to bugs, undercooked gameplay mechanics, and flawed gameplay. Publisher Sega has already closed the door on a potential sequel, but Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart says the studio still wants to try and redeem itself if given the chance.

"We're not making Alpha Protocol 2 but I would make Alpha Protocol 2," he told Play in a recent interview. "To do a job like this, sometimes you have to be optimistic, you have to look to the future and say 'We can do better.' And I always believe that."

As for those things that he thinks Obsidian can "do better", Urquhart has a few ideas of what those may be. Not just the problems in gameplay but also other communications issues that might have made fans expect something that Obsidian wasn't ready to offer.

"I think there were things in the game we could have done better," he conceded. "We've talked about how the cover system wasn't the best. Would it have been better with no cover system, so we could focus on other things instead? There were certain things we did really well – the whole story, the characters, the branching.

"Perhaps it was not necessarily the job we did but there was something beyond the game – how it was represented or how it was sold or what people felt we promised them. Something went off-kilter there. So there's another lesson to learn about communication."

The Obsidian CEO had recently made the same concessions regarding the response to Fallout: New Vegas. The studio is currently working on Dungeon Siege III, which Urquhart has promised they will do a better job with.

Wouldn't mind an alpha protocol 2, it was hardly a bad game, but it was always going to get the rough end of the stick when you get compared to the likes of a Bioware game.

I believe if they were given more time to do it right, the game could of been much better. A sequel would be tight.

8) Despite low ratings and a lot of criticism, I loved alpha Protocol. Would be very excited about a 2nd one!
