PoV: The End of Wii?

When Nintendo announced the Wii console, the big boys scoffed. Sony and Microsoft both believed that motion gaming would be forever relegated to a niche market, and that hardcore gamers would stay with their relatively hardcore consoles. Five years later, both companies have motion-based products on the market and still fall far below the total unit sales for Nintendo’s “casual” system – a pretty clear indicator that Nintendo, as usual, was ahead of the curve.

Now it seems like the time of the Wii is winding down. The Wii U is expected to hit shelves sometime next year and there doesn’t seem to be much for Wii owners to look forward to. A new Kirby title launches this month, followed by what could be the most eagerly anticipated title on the console: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword on November 20th.

As far as I can tell, Skyward Sword is the last big game headed to Wii; certainly the last big game developed by Nintendo. Some of the big multi-platform titles are still getting to the system one way or another, but the rest of the release calendar for this year and next looks pretty bleak for Nintendo fans, with not one major franchise making a return to the system before the Wii U launches.

From where I sit, it’s pretty clear that Nintendo has opted to leave the system with a bang, dropping a massive Zelda title which will surely be well-reviewed and financially successful, then moving on to focus exclusively on Wii U development. They’ve also likely got their sights on improving the market share of the 3DS, so it’s questionable how much time they may have to focus on keeping their previous console alive.

What do you think? Is this holiday season the Wii’s last gasp, or does Nintendo still have a few tricks up its sleeve?

I hope it's the end. The Wii had an amazing start, but it's been pretty much downhill from there. It's going out with a bang; though, so it might just get one last kick before it's gone

In NA at least the Wii is done for after the Holiday Season. All we have left is Skyward Sword and Kirby: Return to Dreamland.

At least in Europe they got Xenoblades and they are also getting The Last Story and Pandora's Tower.

Still I gave up my Wii a long time ago, and Skyward Sword will be the first game I've bought for it in a long time since I've been focusing on my PS3 and my new 3DS. I'm going to look forward to the Wii U once it gets a good number of great games.

Kirby looks great, hopefully Zelda ends things the right way.

For once, I agree with this article. I'm still hoping that Xenoblade, Pandora's Story and Last Story will be release here in North America before the Wii U. I bought the Wii in 2006 and unlike some people, it has been used a lot by every member of my family. The Wii does serves its purpose: its a great Netflix device, a great party machine(Just dance, Wii Sports 2, Wii Party)and exclusive titles.

one of the main reasons the wii is dying is because they didnt try and release QUALITY GAMES THAT PLAYED TO THE WII STRONG POINTS IN THE BEGINNING.
One of the reasons I bought the wii was so I could have a GOOD swordfighting game, or something similar. Everything fell on its face, which is why I was so hopeful for this game to perhaps show that, yes, the wii can do that sorta stuff, but then Wii U was announced...

TLDR: Wii had potential, but it was squandered. With the Wii U one the horizon, the Wii is as good as gone

All the quantity games played on the Wii's strongpoints, which were lackluster motion controls (now don't get me wrong some games did this well and it worked) and a cheap sdk followed by Nintendo's lack of their old seal of quality assurance being murdered. We miss you Seal of Quality and you will never be forgotten!!!!

Um...console generations are typically ~5 years...so this is completely expected and normal Sony and Microsoft as well. I'm guessing you are either young or new to gaming. Hell the Xbox 360 came out only 4 years after the original xbox...

YES..please...let's get real!
What is the main reason Y someone would buy a NINTENDO piece of hardware..............

Mmmmmm......Too hard for you.......Oh well, then let me illuminate!

MARIO...Y yes of course.....
ZELDA....Oh yes that 1 too.......
KIRBY.....Maybe?
SMASH Bros.....Could be.....
Great RPG's.....Considered!
Etc,etc........

NOBODY...I mean NOBODY is gonna buy a NINTENDO machine because of the Gimmicks alone.....If a NINTENDO device comes with gimmicks included then so be it!
We get used to the fact.

But if NINTENDO stopped releasing hardware and just released their 1st party catalogue of characters/games on other platforms... no one would mind a bit...specially me...because to tell you the truth...the gimmicks SUCK!

And yes ...I'm also talking to you $ONY & M$....your gimmicks SUCK too..
