AlienWhere... as in, "Where's my Laptop?!?" (Update! ... Kinda?)

Aurora mALX

Apologies for the Off-Topic post, but some things just need to be said. Hey, even WE need to rant sometimes! Excuse us while we vent...

For many of you, technology is your life. For those of us at QJ.NET, technology is also our work - but this bit of technology has been more work than we bargained for and has damn near driven us back to the 'ol pad of paper and abacus.

We like to keep up on the newest bits of computing, and from time to time, we have the chance to get our hands on some primo gear. So when AlienWare announced the availability of their monster laptop series, the Aurora mALX, we were first in line - literally. Order #1. Boasting to be one of the first 19" SLI notebooks, featuring a Dual 256MB NVidia GeForce Go 7900 GTX, can you blame us? So on May 9th we placed our order and tossed down the cash, foaming at the mouth in anticipation of the promised June 10th delivery.

A month later we're still sloshing around on a floor covered in drool, and have another month of crusty carpet to look forward to.

Order StatusSo what's the darn hold up? Beats us. According to our Order Status (seen right) we're stuck in the limbo known as "Phase 3", which seems to translate to "Thanks for your money, sucka." As weeks went by, we naturally got a bit curious. Multiple emails to AlienWare went unanswered, and only after a few phone calls did we start to get an inkling as to what was up.

According to the folks at AlienWare, we had to wait for their flagship notebook because they were trying to round up some parts. What parts, you might ask? Well, I'll tell you. Seems that they've been hyping up a product with fancy features without having any of that equipment actually ready for building. SLI Video Card? Nope. 19" LCD Display? Guess again. At least they have the case though, right? Wrong.

So what we have here is a case situation where AlienWare is selling a product which doesn't actually exist and that they are incapable of manufacturing. All the bells and whistles that make this notebook the bad-boy that it's supposed to be are MIA. And as an added kick to the throat, they weren't even going to bother telling us about it - despite the fact that "in the rare occurrence that a PC component is not readily available, you will be notified via email."

Oh, did I mention the $4,500 price tag? Apparently you don't always get what you pay for. And so we wait. Right now our ship date is slated for July 10th, a whole 2 months after the Aurora mALX went on sale, and the exact same shipping date you'd be quoted if you bought one today. We'll be sure to keep you updated on the status of this debacle as it unfolds...

...in the mean time, we'll be icing our asses, because it fees like AlienWare has given us a good old fashioned anal probing.

If you have a nightmare purchase story of your own, feel free to tell us about it in the comments - especially if you happen to be in the same predicament as we are. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program...

Update #1: Here it is! The magical day has come and gone and now it's time to share with you the really-worth-it result all our frustration! So, without further ado...

...nah, I'm just joshing ya. You didn't really expect it to get here 3 months after ordering, did you? That's crazy talk! Apparently there is no escaping the limbo of Phase 3, cause we're still there. As if being stuck there wasn't enough, they insist on taunting us with phrases like "Payment has been received" (thanks for rubbing our nose in it) and "the order is now in queue for production." Excuse me, but we ARE the queue! First in line! Remember?

As you can see the saga isn't even close to being over. Hopefully we'll have another update for you before August 10th.

Here we have 2 idiots, who want to sue for every little thing that happens. "OMG, I BURNT MY TOUNGE ON A CUP OF COFFEE, BETTER SUE STARBUCKS!!"

Grow up, and besides, Alienware isn't as big of a company as Microsoft or Dell etc, so if they were sued, it would hurt them a lot. You like they're products do you not? So why sue?

..It's just like returning a PSP from Sony because you have 1 dead pixel. Spoiled bastards.

But don't get me wrong, Alienware did a stupid thing, and QJ.net has all the right to complain, and to get a refund (perphaps a little extra to make both sides happy too).

Heehee, a rant :)

Selling a laptop they haven't created - wow, stupid move. No, you don't have to file a million-dollar lawsuit, but if your not gonna get four-thousand bucks of computer, demand a refund (and maybe a little extra ;) and if they decline, well, then take legal action.

I hate Alienware imo - very fine computers, but they really overcharge.

Dude shut up... Ofcourse you should sue... they steamed the drink Too damn hot.... that puts them at fault. You should not be serving scolding hot beverages that you cant even SIP on. Starbucks has regulations on temp the drink must be, to not be hot, if some dumb employee *****s up, who fault is that? Not yours.

And if customer service is no help, then SUE, because sometimes thats the only thing companies or people respond to.

$4500 for a laptop? Are you out of your mind? Im running a 1ghz desktop and although I dont do gaming on it im happy with it. I wouldn't even think of spending that kind of money on a stinking laptop especially an Alienware. Find something better to do with your money and next time you buy a product over the internet make sure it actually exists first.

Since Dell aquired Alienware, stuff had to change. The major PC company in Canada is MDG they do the same thing. It's funny that they're competing with eachother and selling us, the consumer on LIES LIES LIES. I hate both companies and will never read an alienware ad and take it seriously again. Expect quality to drop and drop with Alienware :(

Not to be a bi*ch or anything, but who pays $4,500 for a laptop? Hell, who buys from Alienware for that matter? They're a garbage company, never trust them or Dell (I guess they are one and the same now). Alienware/Dell vastly overprices everything they sell on the grounds that they look better, that's it. If you know how to shop, you won't go near Dell or Alienware, unless there's like a 25% off sale, which would only bring the price down to average competitor's prices.

Ya I wouldn't sue, but I would demand they give you the interest/profit they made off your $4500 in the last 3 months as a discount on your PC....as they probably took your money, and at the least put it in their bank account to make interest, or like most companies, re-invest it in the meantime, giving them free money to play with.....corporate america is ridiculous....

# nightmare in FUTURE SHOPping landsoopergooman 2006-06-16 16:19
Well, yesterday iI had to go buy a new router, because a couple days prevcious i stepped on mine breaking the atenna. So I goto said SHOP and buy a, dlink di-524 e3, and bring it home. I tried setting it up , but to no avail. So like any perplexed tech user I had to call their tech support line. Meanwhile as my call went from a wait time of 12 mins up to 19 then up to 34 well, i got pissed and kept redialing them until i got a better position in line(prolly shoulda waited) So I get the guys to go through the steps to set it up. After 8 hours on the phone, the guy toold me that it was defective. So bright and early today(1pm) I dragged myself all the way across town to stupid future shop, I get a second router, after doling out 20 bucks in gas so far yesterday and 20 again for today. I bring the second one home and yet again I'm hit with the tech dood saying its defective. So I brought it back again, and proceeded to tell the guys there that they should take all units of the shelf, because they're defective, and that they shouldn't be selling a defective product. Well, thats when things started to get ugly, they made me wait around( I'm on Crutches and in ALOT of pain) and shifted me to different "floor" managers( dorks who know ShYte). I told them that I wanted and expected a direct exchange for another router, even if it cost more than the one I had. (on the phone they said it would be fine) Well these jerks wanted to trade my router for one that was brought back to them. The hell with that I told em. Honestly why would I want someone else's broken router? Do you see the 'deal' there? So to make a long story, longer. I got my money back, told them they just lost a customer(i would spend on average $600/month there) and that head office would be hearing from me. So finally I went to staples, told the lady that was werking my dilemma and she was like, " this happens all the time at future shop.." and "that their(FS) troubled patrons usually end up at Staples". Plus the router was $10 CHEAPER. So I bought it, brought it home and had it all running within ten minutes of getting home. Finally some connectivity.(i was begining to miss PimpStreamer)

Basically what I am saying is:

BUYER BEWARE

oh and for anyone else the DI-524 H/W E3 will absolutly NOT work with XP Home, Service pack 2. so don't buy one.....

Alienware is like S¨¨t, since they dont help people out of warranty, dont even care to sell or repair their parts. Thats a shame because if you are out of warranty u are doomed and just have to wait ur system fails for any reason.. Their parts are customized and super HARD to find. This happened to me because my laptop was so hot that my videocard burned. Then I got a replacement and i was in warrany (i paid some taxes but nvm). Then 1 year later my videocard had some problems or maybe the mobo.. but i was out of warranty.. and guess what alienware didnt care at all and cant sell any parts. Better get a Dell (since Alienware is part of Dell... ) because even if ur dell lappie is out of warrany you can always find parts with them.

Just another story...bah!

ok,so this was the month before the 360 came out, i didnt think i was gonna get one but i ended up {again} getiing it but instead of buying it in a store and waiting for so long i figured, hey, im gonna order it online and have it shipped here, let them do all the work right?right.so well the launch day rolls around me and my friend decide to go to target and sit outside all night to get him one. so i could have very well picked one up right then and there but i kept in mind hey i got premium shipping i should be getting it later today right, so we finnally get the core system at about 8 in the morning and i wait for the console to come later in the day so i wait and i wait ,didnt come. so about 3-5 months later i get it in the mail after haeted disputes with the shipping people and eb games/gamestop {thats right ***** you eb/gamestop} BUT dont get excited to see that i had finnally won the thing that came was the extra controllers, and all the games, basically just accessories so i got on the phone with the eb games person she guaranteed that it would be there within a week, so finally{*****} i got it a week later and i still have it today, the thing that sucks is that earlier today i turned it on, and the console just decides to turn off my tv and the ring flashed red so im starting to think that its a dud....THE END

Alienware is horrible, plain and simple. Their shipping is pure garbage, and their laptops overheat. I know of one case where the heatsink MELTED. As for their desktops, horribly overpriced. You always save $1000 if you build their desktops by yourself. In the end just stay away.

# AW sucksGuest 2006-06-16 19:09
I won't give too many details coz they (AW) might recognize me.

Long story short:

- bought a top of the line laptop (~4000$)

- ended up getting it 2 months late

- it had bad pixels, keyboard problems, reboot problems and black screen problems (insane...)

- they refused to reimburse me, so my laptop went back from them to me 3 times.

- ended up them sending me a new one, coz, the original one, was just defective after i pressured them like hell

- I had a working laptop as bought 6 months late

Why do you think they have suck loosy ratings, and soooo many unhappy customers at RR ?

http://www.resellerratings.com/seller1650.html

I'll never EVER buy an AW again.

yeah, I ordered an alienware area-51m 2 years ago. it was top o' the line and cost $4000. It took 2 months to get it, played halo for 15 minutes, and the piece of crap keeled over. they sent me a replacement video card, same thing, sent it back, they replaced the mobo and processor, got it back a month later, same thing. Turns out laptops aren't supposed to be for high performance/gaming. Apparently they designed the heat dissipation worse than having a little gnome in there blowing on the processor. so i ended up selling it to some poor sucker on ebay and building myself a real comp. oh yeah, and none of their customer support speaks english and are all named maria or raul.

stupid, anyone that says to sue is stupid. qj.net is stupid for posting a non-psp related item in the psp blog. and Jake D is stupid because he says in his little "rant" about the "promised June 10th delivery date" are you retarded? DE DE DEE! the image even says "estimated" and yes of course as so many have you noted.......every these days is buyers beware. The guy from the netherlands is rite. americans are unwilling to own up to their own mistakes--they have to sue everyone else becasue its not their own fault. Its disgusting--no wonder the world hates us. Im gettin the hell out of this country when I can.

I agree with most of the people here 4500 is just a stupid price to pay for a laptop. First the thing is going to be too blasted big to be carried around. Second the battery life might be 2hrs at the most. Granted you can do what you want it is your money. I got a nice laptop from Sams Club, it is a 3.0ghz Pentium with a 100gb hard drive a duel layer dvd burner 512mb memory and an ATI graphics card. It can run any game I have tried on it. Even half life 2 and doom 3 and I got it on the day I bought it and I only paid 1100. With alienware your just paying for the name a nice paint job and more power than you'll ever need. I guess it's true what they say. Some guys buy expensive cars to compensate for their shortcomings so I guess geeks buy expensive computers for the same reason.

# Try telling your boss why you don't have what he paid forPSPrometheus 2006-06-17 00:20
OK so it goes down like this. I work as an outside sales Rep traveling all over the world pitching our product to various manufactures. After a VERY good year sales wise my boss offered to purchase some new equipment for me to use on the road. He set up purchase orders for a few smaller items and then told me that I could use my company card to buy a new laptop as a little extra bonus. His only stipulation on my purchase was to keep it under 6k. I told him I wouldn't need nearly that much but I was drooling all the same. I had barely made it through the door at home before I was on Alienware's site specing out my new toy. This was back in May. At the end of May my boss gets a notice that I had a charge for $4800.00 and change on my card and it needed his direct approval. He figured it was for the laptop I had purchased so he signed off on it no problem. Well I get back into the office after a three week sales trip and my boss sees me logging some info in on my old laptop. He asks me where the one he had just paid for is so I told him that it hadn't come in before I left out so my wife probably had it at the house. No problem right? He tells me to make sure to bring it in on Monday because he wants to see what a five thousand dollar machine can do. The problem here is NO %#$ %##$^ laptop. I start e-mailing and calling AW left and right and get the blow off every time. My boss is telling me to produce the laptop, so I am telling AW to get off their rumps and deliver. I finally had to prove to him via. the order status and a recorded conversation with AW that I did order it, they just haven't kept up their end of the bargain. They wouldn't even tell me what the delay was. Truth be told, untill I read this I didn't know what was going on. I will NEVER deal with AW again. I own an older Area 51m and I have loved it but this whole thing has turned me into a Xenophobe

you can't sue them, because you'd have to prove at least a $20 loss to be admissible in a u.s. court. and as alienware has not and will not charge you the $4,500 until the laptop is made and shipped, there are no grounds on which to sue.

BUT, im sure you guys will be excited once you get the system, they really do make great products.

I bought a Creative Webcam Live! Ultra for Notebooks

thinking that it would work on my laptop....boy was i wrong! The only way to get the drivers to work correctly is if i use a pcmcia usb card. I called Creative and they told me it wasn't their problem. So i then went to the forums and lo n behold there are a LOT of people with all sorts od laptops that this does not work on.

So a few of us were complainging (well most of them were) and guess what happened? we got banned from the forum. So instead of fixing the problem with a driver update they banned us instead. I know Creative tech do not support their forums but this another case of some sweet customer service like Alienware,Dell, Symantec, Compaq/HP, etc etc.

Michael Dell shipped us a 100% P.O.S. laptop from Dell that wont even start I mean the thing literally won't turn on. Inspiron 1505 or something like that. Media center drivers not compatible with the intel wireless chipset. Once again, Bill Gates and Michael Dell tell the world to "bend over sucker".

It's really too bad, because alienware used to have cultloyalty in the desktop realm. Once Dell bought them, it was downhill from there. It's a shame alienware was boughtout by Dell only to become what they once swore they would never be like.

Long story short, if you can cancel the payment on your credit card, do it. Do it now before its too late. Get yourself something better, something cheaper, because, I can personally assure you, it is NOT worth it. Their customer service is well below poor, and the specifications aren't fantastically beyond anything you could do yourself. All you're paying for is glowy lights, and pretend service.

This is just the tip of the iceberg in things that will go wrong.

so the other day i took a trip out to this town in wapaca because there was nothing to do in green bay so when i got out there my freind Jons mom had made steaks now my family is pretty poor and its not often that I have a chance to eat steak so i tried to eat as much as I could. so after me and my freind Jon had finished our meal we went down to his basement and played Untold Legends for PSP but after a while my PSP died on me and I didn't feel like sitting in my car and waiting for it to charge because the only charger we had was a car charger because he had left his at bens house. after that me and Jon went down to Murphys bar and ordered a pitcher of bud light which we proceeded to drink then we called up Jons freind Matt but he couldn't come until midnight because he had an assignment due and the site he was trying to use wasn't working for his online class so we waited for a while and then my girlfreind Tia gives me a call and tells me that she was bringing my freind Jonny (Jonny berg not Jon Ehrenberg) up to wapaca so we could celebrate Jons birthday so me and Jon shot a few rounds of pool and through a couple rounds of darts drank some more beer and then Tia showed up with my brother and Jonny. Then we all went back to Jons house to drink more beer. I don't remember much after that but I woke up this morning and I went online and I looked at this post and well here we are... The moral of this story is ***** happens.

# Dell Comes throughGuest 2006-06-24 19:23
In all fairness to DELL, this article and my comments earlier got me thinking. Why not push a little harder? My girlfriend and I explained our situation to the fourth different person, (this time located in the Phillipines (sp?)) and tried everything.

The problem:- The machine - Inspiron 1505 - would either not turn on or would occasionally start and then get the modern day "blue screen of death" fatal error. After taking many pieces out and off in an effort to isolate the problem, the tech decided that it was the motherboard. To our surprise, we got a call the next day and setup an appointment (convienient for us) for the following day. Call on Wednesday, guy shows up on Friday with a new upgraded motherboard. Fifty minutes later while my gf watched him take the whole thing apart everything was fine. It took several phone calls and many hours on hold, but I will admit that DELL finally came through for us. So far so good as the service plan that we paid for appears to be paying off. Interesting note that we were told that the laptops (DELLs at least) were put together by robots ! I didn't know that before. Hopefully this version which was of course assembled by a skilled tech guy will hold up. So even though we got pretty frustrated, we must give Props to Dell for the eventual solid Customer support ! Maybe some of the DELL CS can rollover onto alienware as far as not advertising (and collecting deposts) for items that do not yet exist or at least cannot yet be procured to meet demand.

# ***** you too?Guest 2006-07-22 05:31
Hey guys, i'm in the same situation you are. Same system, same Phase 3 limbo. The difference is I made the fatal mistake of upgrading to dual 512mb graphics cards and a 200gig raid 0 hard drive... so they had to put it in as a new order (it require a new motherboard) which jumped me to the back of the damn queue!!!!

Anyway I really appreciate you guys making this post. If it weren't for you guys I'd have no idea what the hell was going on with my precious order, keep up the good work! The more updates the better!
