AlienWhere... as in, "Where's my Laptop?!?" (Update! ... Kinda?) |
Ó

Apologies for the Off-Topic post, but some things just need to be said. Hey, even WE need to rant sometimes! Excuse us while we vent...
For many of you, technology is your life. For those of us at QJ.NET, technology is also our work - but this bit of technology has been more work than we bargained for and has damn near driven us back to the 'ol pad of paper and abacus.
We like to keep up on the newest bits of computing, and from time to time, we have the chance to get our hands on some primo gear. So when AlienWare announced the availability of their monster laptop series, the Aurora mALX, we were first in line - literally. Order #1. Boasting to be one of the first 19" SLI notebooks, featuring a Dual 256MB NVidia GeForce Go 7900 GTX, can you blame us? So on May 9th we placed our order and tossed down the cash, foaming at the mouth in anticipation of the promised June 10th delivery.
A month later we're still sloshing around on a floor covered in drool, and have another month of crusty carpet to look forward to.
So what's the darn hold up? Beats us. According to our Order Status (seen right) we're stuck in the limbo known as "Phase 3", which seems to translate to "Thanks for your money, sucka." As weeks went by, we naturally got a bit curious. Multiple emails to AlienWare went unanswered, and only after a few phone calls did we start to get an inkling as to what was up.According to the folks at AlienWare, we had to wait for their flagship notebook because they were trying to round up some parts. What parts, you might ask? Well, I'll tell you. Seems that they've been hyping up a product with fancy features without having any of that equipment actually ready for building. SLI Video Card? Nope. 19" LCD Display? Guess again. At least they have the case though, right? Wrong.
So what we have here is a case situation where AlienWare is selling a product which doesn't actually exist and that they are incapable of manufacturing. All the bells and whistles that make this notebook the bad-boy that it's supposed to be are MIA. And as an added kick to the throat, they weren't even going to bother telling us about it - despite the fact that "in the rare occurrence that a PC component is not readily available, you will be notified via email."
Oh, did I mention the $4,500 price tag? Apparently you don't always get what you pay for. And so we wait. Right now our ship date is slated for July 10th, a whole 2 months after the Aurora mALX went on sale, and the exact same shipping date you'd be quoted if you bought one today. We'll be sure to keep you updated on the status of this debacle as it unfolds...
...in the mean time, we'll be icing our asses, because it fees like AlienWare has given us a good old fashioned anal probing.
If you have a nightmare purchase story of your own, feel free to tell us about it in the comments - especially if you happen to be in the same predicament as we are. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program...
Update #1: Here it is! The magical day has come and gone and now it's time to share with you the really-worth-it result all our frustration! So, without further ado...
...nah, I'm just joshing ya. You didn't really expect it to get here 3 months after ordering, did you? That's crazy talk! Apparently there is no escaping the limbo of Phase 3, cause we're still there. As if being stuck there wasn't enough, they insist on taunting us with phrases like "Payment has been received" (thanks for rubbing our nose in it) and "the order is now in queue for production." Excuse me, but we ARE the queue! First in line! Remember?
As you can see the saga isn't even close to being over. Hopefully we'll have another update for you before August 10th.

Grow up, and besides, Alienware isn't as big of a company as Microsoft or Dell etc, so if they were sued, it would hurt them a lot. You like they're products do you not? So why sue?
..It's just like returning a PSP from Sony because you have 1 dead pixel. Spoiled bastards.
But don't get me wrong, Alienware did a stupid thing, and QJ.net has all the right to complain, and to get a refund (perphaps a little extra to make both sides happy too).
Heehee, a rant :)

I ordered a Dell XPS 700 last month, and it has yet to arrive. Upon calling Dell (5 times), they informed me that my $4,000 comp won't ship until July 27. I will be in Italy at the time . . . :(

Dude shut up... Ofcourse you should sue... they steamed the drink Too damn hot.... that puts them at fault. You should not be serving scolding hot beverages that you cant even SIP on. Starbucks has regulations on temp the drink must be, to not be hot, if some dumb employee *****s up, who fault is that? Not yours.
And if customer service is no help, then SUE, because sometimes thats the only thing companies or people respond to.

This isn't the first time QJ has posted "irrelevant" articles, and this certainly won't be the last. Now, I'm not for or against these, but there is no reason to get bent out of shape over ONE article . . .

@#7, YOU are the idiot. Lawsuits work. And, it was McDonald's not Starbucks. Old lady burnt herself with coffee and got a reported 1.5 million bucks or more for damages.
Qj, that's what the law is for.

and lawsuits aren't the answer... violence is the answer. if you don't get what you want, you find the nearest alienware office and wait outside until they get off work. bash *****ing skulls until you get what you want. it works for me.

well i hope that you don't end up the way I did. there's a growing lack of concern when it comes to customer satisfaction these days. As for myself, I'm kind of sick and tired with the whole lot.

Long story short:
- bought a top of the line laptop (~4000$)
- ended up getting it 2 months late
- it had bad pixels, keyboard problems, reboot problems and black screen problems (insane...)
- they refused to reimburse me, so my laptop went back from them to me 3 times.
- ended up them sending me a new one, coz, the original one, was just defective after i pressured them like hell
- I had a working laptop as bought 6 months late
Why do you think they have suck loosy ratings, and soooo many unhappy customers at RR ?

I'll never EVER buy an AW again.

You have 3 in each 4 articles complaining about the ps3 599 $ price and u don't bother spending 4,500$ in a laptop?????
I think that if u wanna make the hype and support for xbox 360 u should do it in another site.
I for one will definitelly stop viewing this site.

He's not whining, and he's not complaining. He's just laying out the story and the situation, probably to warn other people. So quit being complete *****s to one of the guys who brings you psp news 24/7. How can you be so *****in rude? Screw you people.
Hey man, don't sweat it. It's a live and learn situation. Just get it over with and go with a more secure option next time!

Chick at McDonalds: Ouch, I burnt my tongue. Hmm, I think I'll take the time to set up a lawsuit against McDonalds even though they have HOT! warnings on their cups, and even an iota of common sense would have to told me the cup was hot.
Everyone nowadays wants to get money for nothing and their things for free. What happened to the good old days when people had to suck it up and tough it out? One day, the human race is just going to collapse under slackers.

I had something close to that happen to me
I ordered an Area51-M7700 system($2800) and it took them FOREVER to build it. They actually put it up to like...phase 7, and then realized that they did something wrong, and it came all the way back down to stupid phase 3. I hated waiting for that laptop, it seriously took them the longest time.
BUT, im sure you guys will be excited once you get the system, they really do make great products.
turn virus crap on right away, my system crashed twice in 4 months, and that deff shouldnt happen. Also, check your IDE controller once you get the system, the first one they sent me was damaged

thinking that it would work on my laptop....boy was i wrong! The only way to get the drivers to work correctly is if i use a pcmcia usb card. I called Creative and they told me it wasn't their problem. So i then went to the forums and lo n behold there are a LOT of people with all sorts od laptops that this does not work on.
So a few of us were complainging (well most of them were) and guess what happened? we got banned from the forum. So instead of fixing the problem with a driver update they banned us instead. I know Creative tech do not support their forums but this another case of some sweet customer service like Alienware,Dell, Symantec, Compaq/HP, etc etc.

It's really too bad, because alienware used to have cultloyalty in the desktop realm. Once Dell bought them, it was downhill from there. It's a shame alienware was boughtout by Dell only to become what they once swore they would never be like.

Cancel your Alienware order and just get Sagers SLi notebook 9750(?). Seems pretty kickass and the base configuration is ~3,000USD.
I've had their discontinued 5680 for some time now..and the only problem I have is with the toshiba DVD combo drive (which is epidemic, apparently).
Sager's tech support is supposedly better ( I dealt with a reseller for mine).
Good luck.

Starbucks made my coffee too hot and since I'm too stupid to test it myself I swallowed it and hurt myself...boo hooooooooooooo! !!! I want my mommy to take care of the situation for me and sue them!!!! I'm too stupid to realize that too hot for one person is different then another person so I just assume Starbucks POLICY covers exactly what it too hot for me!!!!! Because I'm the only damn person on this planet that matters!!!!!!!
Go ahead fool, sue! You'll loose like the looser you are. Jerky!

lol at people who think what is in one section of qj.net COULD NOT POSSIBLY be in another area as well..."what does this have to do with PSP???"(This post is in PSPupdates, XBox360, Wii, PS3, and possibly others)

Long story short, if you can cancel the payment on your credit card, do it. Do it now before its too late. Get yourself something better, something cheaper, because, I can personally assure you, it is NOT worth it. Their customer service is well below poor, and the specifications aren't fantastically beyond anything you could do yourself. All you're paying for is glowy lights, and pretend service.
This is just the tip of the iceberg in things that will go wrong.

The problem:- The machine - Inspiron 1505 - would either not turn on or would occasionally start and then get the modern day "blue screen of death" fatal error. After taking many pieces out and off in an effort to isolate the problem, the tech decided that it was the motherboard. To our surprise, we got a call the next day and setup an appointment (convienient for us) for the following day. Call on Wednesday, guy shows up on Friday with a new upgraded motherboard. Fifty minutes later while my gf watched him take the whole thing apart everything was fine. It took several phone calls and many hours on hold, but I will admit that DELL finally came through for us. So far so good as the service plan that we paid for appears to be paying off. Interesting note that we were told that the laptops (DELLs at least) were put together by robots ! I didn't know that before. Hopefully this version which was of course assembled by a skilled tech guy will hold up. So even though we got pretty frustrated, we must give Props to Dell for the eventual solid Customer support ! Maybe some of the DELL CS can rollover onto alienware as far as not advertising (and collecting deposts) for items that do not yet exist or at least cannot yet be procured to meet demand.

Anyway I really appreciate you guys making this post. If it weren't for you guys I'd have no idea what the hell was going on with my precious order, keep up the good work! The more updates the better!
