Revolution to Play DVDs... Using External Hardware?

When the Revolution was unveiled last year at E3, Nintendo stated that it would have DVD playback capabilities. Many assumed the self feeding drive would be able to handle DVD discs considering that their size is comparable to that of 12 cm Revolution optical discs. Furthermore, the drive will be able to distinguish between GameCube and Revolution games, so why not DVDs? However, after reading the following section from a press release regarding the Revolution, an entirely different piece of hardware may be utilized:

"Two Disc Formats, One Slot: Instead of a tray, a single, innovative, self-loading media bay will play both 12-centimeter optical discs used for the new system as well as Nintendo GameCube discs. Owners will have the option of equipping a small, self-contained attachment to play movies and other DVD content."

Considering that they are giving owners the option of installing another piece of hardware to play DVDs, I am left to assume that it is a separate DVD drive altogether.

At first I thought this was a rather silly move on Big N's half, but I now think it's genius. I have about 5 DVD players in my house right now (I may have 6 as I'm pretty sure if I stick a DVD into my toaster that it'll play) so I have no need for another machine to do that for me. Thus, cut costs for gamers who don't want that option, but offer it to gamers who do. Thus, this move works well with supporting the gamer first, and the general user second.

hmmmm...very smart indeed. Most videogame DVD players (PS2 and x-box) arn't really that great at reading the disks anyways. I was trying to watch Red v.s Blue Season 3 on my PS2 today, and the damn thing froze half way through! Genius move by nintendo

Agreed

Yeah totaly agreed with N's decision... its probably something you connect onto the Revo... like the IR cooller for the xbox controller. Anyway on my side of the world... DVD.. is on my PC and Laptop only :) got to love dobly earphones :) (L&D)Fredy

What?

Just because it says a seperate piece of hardware doesn't mean you will need a whole other DVD drive. It means that they will have an attachment that unlocks the DVD playback functionality so that way they do not have to pay licensing fees to Philips and keep the cost down of the system. Its the same reason why the original Xbox has the IR receiver. You couldnt be more wrong with that assumption.

Super old

This news is older than the oldest old. Reggie announced this a long time ago. Plus he said it was somethinf that would go inside the system. Also I think if it is a whole new drive there could be possible blu-ray or HD capabilities.

a really good idea?

oh *****, i think i posted a blank comment. anyway, why is this a good idea? i like the fact that i don't need a dvd player under my telly... as my ps2 does that. but i'm also surprised it has held on so long, it will keel over some time, and given that ps3 will only be out in 3 years time and cost over 3000 dollars i will need something to replace that. to add dvd funtionality would be cheaper than to add little rubber feet to the rev. i think this is a unwise decision, people will expect it to play dvds... ohwell, i'm not that bothered, but i just thought the amount of people saying how wonderful this idea was needed to consider that perhaps it isn't so great. mind you, if rev is really cheap then i certainly won't complain. (i will if it hasn't got rubber feet though)

good move

sounds good... this keeps the cost down and leaves the option open to those that want it.. it is also more likely to be a dongle of some kind that unlocks the function.. it would be really stupid to have a whole new drive to add to it.

...

If it can't read DVDs at all then im assuming the revolution will have its own media that it will be using... But since it won't then it will most likely be like the xbox where you have to buy a little IR receiver to play DVDs

ddd

It is a smart move ont the big N's part because most people already have DVD players any way. So if people are too lazy too go up in there tv rooms and watch a mive they can just attach or put in the Exteranl Harware

Small prob

Also when you go out to rent stuff you can play games right away. The PS2 became the only working DVD player in the house and out lived many others. Because of this, I started to rent more Gamecube games so I could play them with worrying about the console being in use. Not that stand alone DVD players are so cheap it may no longer be a big issues. At lease we have the ability to add in the feature...
