Said Miyamoto at this year's roundtable event for the company, he "really wanted to release a Pikmin game" specifically for this occassion. Apparently, work on this project has been in development for a while now, and "as we've been working on the Wii U I've gotten a look at the fancy new graphics and the new controller, I got the feeling it's the perfect game for that system, so we're going to make it on that."

Miyamoto did seem a bit torn about the making the announcement, however, knowing full well that the last thing they'd want is to spill any details that might ruin the big surprise. Nonetheless, "[T]here are two sides to me today, the corporate side that wants to follow the precedent we set for E3 of not announcing any titles, and the creative side of me that wants to tell you we're working on Pikmin."

That's good enough for us for now, Mr. Miyamoto. He's previously reassured that a new title is indeed well under development, and that while it won't be at E3, there's a good reason for it.
