Nintendo to Patch Skyward Sword Bug

We talked last week about The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’s game-breaking bug. If you missed the article and can’t be bothered to click the link in the previous sentence, here’s the basic gist: If you complete certain actions in a certain order, your game will essentially become stuck between events and impossible to complete. This bug crops up about 30 hours into the game, and if you hit it, you have to start over from your last save.

Unfortunately for Nintendo Wii owners, there’s really no such thing as a “last save.” Unless you painstakingly double your saves between the Wii and an SD card, there’s no way to recover old saves, which means you’re going to end up starting Skyward Sword from the beginning. Nintendo, being without a method to patch games, advised players on how to avoid this bug on their official site.

Now, the company is offering to patch the save files and repair the problem, with one catch: In order to take advantage of this offer, you’ll have to send your SD card or your Wii in to Nintendo for servicing. The process takes at least a week, though the company is expecting longer waits thanks to the holiday rush.

If mailing Nintendo your Wii doesn’t sound like something you want to do, the company is hard at work on a downloadable patch. There’s no infrastructure for Nintendo to deliver patches of this nature, so it could be a while before the whole thing gets sorted out. But, at least they’re working on it. It’s worth noting that these solutions are only available for Japanese players; we’re still awaiting word on what will happen for us in the west.

Have you had any issues with Skyward Sword? Would you send your Wii in for a broken game save, or just start over?

about time they started investing in a way to patch isn't it? 4.4 better have one if they keep breaking games like this. Or in Nintendo's QA department so incompetent they can't find a major bug like this?

hold on as far as im aware this happens rarely with nintendo, so rare in fact thats its the first i've heard of, but with the other consoles it happens quite a lot, one bad thing happens with a really good company and people like you act like arses, where as when it happens with sony or microsoft (quite a lot) all people like you say is "oh well it happens" and not just with software but hardware too, stop bloody complaining about rare occurrences, and most people like you dont even own a wii, you just comment to have a little dig, just like iphone users. GROW UP

well as it is if your one of the few who for example have the read errors for SSBB(which uses dl-dvd) then you have to send in your wii aswell if you dont want to waste 10-15 dollars on a thier disc cleaner.

In theory Nintendo could implement a patch system retrospectively .

Iirc the system menu caches the dol file for the game before executing so they just have to have the update override the cached version.

They could also opt for other methods eg. Create a channel which can be downloaded through the shop channel.

they should createa channel that "mail my save data" so they can path the save data.."...
To avoid all the trouble. Channel should update accordingly to games that need to be patched.

SCREW that. I rather start over, this sucks, after collecting every goddess cube I could doing all these side quests... it's SOOO frustrating. AND they just utilize the same three places all throughout the game. I'm thoroughly disappointed with this particular Zelda game. I don't want my money back, I want them to make the next one fantastic :)
