Nintendo Patches Skyward Sword Bug in Japan

We talked a bit about the Skyward Sword bug last week. If this is the first you’ve heard of it, here’s what’s been going on: completing certain events in the game may cause it to accidentally lock off the rest of the story, forcing you to start the whole thing over. Last week it was revealed that Nintendo is accepting Wii consoles for repair in Japan, but it looks like the games developer has actually come up with a method for patching their title.

In Japan, Nintendo has just added a channel to the Wii home screen titled the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Restoration Channel. The entire goal of this new channel is fixing the bug and making your save playable again, and reports indicate that it’s been working.

Unfortunately, for some users, the special restoration channel only repairs files on the main Wii memory. Players that saved their Skyward Sword data to an SD card will still have to send the card in for restoration, unless Nintendo finds some way to update the patch channel.

There’s still no word on how Nintendo is going to address this issue in the west, but if the restoration channel proves successful, it’s very likely it will be hitting a Wii near you very soon. Not too shabby for a company that up until now had no way to update or patch a game.

Let’s just hope they learn from this mistake and build the Wii U with these types of issues in mind.

"Players that saved their Skyward Sword data to an SD card will still have to send the card in for restoration, unless Nintendo finds some way to update the patch channel."

Or put the game save back on the main memory...duh! :P

Not only that but...

"unless Nintendo finds some way to update the patch channel."

I'm sure they can "finds" a way seeing as how they create channels to begin with.

But I doubt they'll do that. They probably don't want crooks coming out of the wood work telling people to send them their SD card and for $20 they'll fix their broken game.

Transferring the file is the reasonable option, unless your Wii's system memory is full.

Also, do you prefer that gaming companies are treated as plural? Because the jury's sort of out on that one.

the only reason they did this now is to keep their userbase untill next year when WiiU is suppoesed to come out. only problem though is this save patch more or less ties the game save to the console it was on when it was patched so if you move it wont work

The patch channel does literally 5 things:
1. Decrypts your Zelda save in Internal Mem
2. Checks sanity of the save
3. Checks that you last saved at the "stuck" location
4. Changes some byte that means you can again talk to the Goron and unlock the door
5. Encrypts save and overwrites

Ah! I am glad someone put my idea on a practical use!!!

http://www.qj.net/wii/news/nintendo-to-patch-skyward-sword-bug.html

But like I said before this should be a general patch channel, not only for Zelda. Other M and Tomb Raider comes to mind...

Anyways, I don't claim any credit because THIS WAAS THE OBVIOUS SOLUTION FROM START!!!!
And piss me off they did nothing for Other M...

Heres a though, why not repair then ship to game stores, then people take there game back to te shop and exchange it for a new fixed one?

That would only help you if you ever wanted to play the game again. Fixing the disc without fixing the save game file wont help.

With the channel you can fix your game forever, as many times as you want so....why spend the gas going back and forth to the store? Why spend money on all that extra shipping? That's a total waste.

maybe because of the terms you accept when you patch it. the part of if you delete your shop account your save will be invalid

What about it?

1. Why the hell would you do that?

2. If you did that then ALL of your downloaded channels would be no good.

3. Create a new FREE account then patch it again. Problem solved.
