Ngmoco: While Nintendo franchises succeed, third parties suffer |
Listed in: News Tags: Neil Young, ngmoco, nintendo ds, Nintendo Wii

In an interview with Game Daily, Ngmoco's founder, Neil Young, talked about why he thinks Nintendo's franchises hurt third party developers.
"I think Nintendo always has the benefit of its franchises," Young said, speaking to popular franchises such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pokemon.
"But I don’t think it ends up being a really rich ecosystem for third parties," Young concluded.
This has been a common complaint with Nintendo systems running all the way back to the Nintendo 64, which had very little third party support. The GameCube saw even less support, and ultimately suffered because of it. With the Wii, some third parties have been able to have success when competing with Nintendo's big franchises. On the Nintendo DS, there have been many success stories as of late, most notably Scribblenauts and Super Scribblenauts, developed by 5th Cell and published by Warner Bros. Games.

As for Mario on the other hand, sure the games are always Save the princess, but at least they throw in some variety and tell you to save the princess in a different way from the last game.

Solution: Make better games and throw some marketing money at it. Nintendo makes some pretty great games and puts a lot of marketing money behind them. The loyal Nintendo fanbase only boosts this further.
If you don't market your game when there's a figurative sea of crap games that people are trying to avoid, it's bound to fail.

LOL a cod troll nice. well ive played call of duty before on ps3 and altough it was a good game it got boring for me quick, like halo, and the rest of the call of duty series. the wii is an awesome system its just behind when it comes to specs and graphics, but if i were to have to think about it i dont think many ps3 games catch my attention as much as nintendo's games do. Yeah if 3rd party developers set their minds to develop a really well made game then they would have a better chance!
