Angry Birds dev responds to Nintendo over cheap games comments |

Angry Birds developer Rovio has took a potshot at Nintendo over Satoru Iwata's recent comments that cheap smartphone apps are slowly destroying the value of games.

Speaking in an interview with MCV, the firms franchise manager Peter Vesterbacka said that he doesn't agree with Iwata's statement and goes on to say.
“It’s interesting to see people like Nintendo saying smartphones are destroying the games industry,” Vesterbacka mulls. “Of course, if I was trying to sell a $49 pieces of plastic to people then yes, I’d be worried too. But I think it’s a good sign that people are concerned – because from my point of view we’re doing something right.”
“Games consoles for us are just like launching on a new smartphone platform,” says Vesterbacka. “Look, the console market is important, but it’s also… It’s not dying, but not the fastest growing platform out there. So we don’t see it the way others do. A lot of people in the games industry, they think the ‘real’ games are on consoles. You’re only a ‘real’ games company if you do a big budget game. But we don’t have that inferiority complex.”
The smartphone title has achieved over 100 million downloads and was recently released on PSN, but not on Microsoft's Xbox Live Marketplace. The reason? Well, according to Vesterbacka, it's because of MS refusal to allow frequent content updates.
“Is that our fault? No, that’s their problem. There is no reason why, when you do digital distribution on console, you couldn’t do frequent updates. It’s just a legacy way of thinking. And if the consoles want to stay relevant they have to start mimicking what’s going on around them on app stores, smartphones and online. It’s the only way. because people expect games to stay fresh. If you pay US$ 59 or US$ 69 dollars and you get no updates – but you pay 99 cents for a game in the App Store and get updates every month, then it sets the expectations higher. So the pressure is definitely on those guys.”
“All they are doing is teaching customers there will always be a promoted price eventually. It works in terms of quick sales and they can occasionally say they are in the Top Ten – but it’s not the marketing I would do. I don’t see the value in it at all. It’s not smart.”

1) On one hand I love my games like Pokemon, Tales of Symphonia, and Halo (which have all rake in 200+ hours per game with me). They are completely solid and though they could freshen-up with updates, they don't need them.
2) On another hand I love the constant updates that keep smartphone games fresh. Angry Birds, Bubble Burst, and Fall Down 3D are fantastic and addicting, but once I've lost my "sitting and waiting for other things time" I stop playing. They don't have lasting appeal.
My theory is that if the large game companies worked their downloadable games in the format that smartphones used, they'd have some really optimized killer stuff! Since consoles don't change like phones. And if they did such things for their major games we'd end up with too many time-killers like WOW.
Although I'd like to pick up Pokemon HearGold and update to hold the new Pokemon, it's not necessary. If it was possible that would just mean I'd have to play all my old games and I'd lose my social life because of the worth that console games hold.
Smartphone games are adequately priced and it's hard to bring myself to pay more than $2.
I don't hesitate with $60 for my console because I can spot the quality and I know I'm not wasting my cash.
They both fit their markets fine. If they ever start mixing (phones w/story & mechanics, systems w/price & updates) then I'll have a seizure because of the sheer decision's I'll have to make... but it'd be AWESOME!

I think a lot of people are missing a major point here. The console game industry is locked into this BS level of paying for games in the $50 and $60 area. Why? That is total BS! A game like FF13 costs $60 yet a regurgitated release like RockBand3 also costs $60? Come on!!!! Take a serious look at the development costs between the two.
In general we pay more for console games because WE DID NOT FULLY pay for the console. In general, this is why Nintendo games are cheaper. But I digress.
Take a look at my iPad. I paid over $600 for it. That unit is not sold at a loss. Therefore there are no licensing fees stacked on top for those games. The games are going to be cheaper right off the bat. Add the fact that the games are being sold at a NORMAL LEVEL based on development costs. These are real people that are pricing their games at a fair market value in order to make a PROFIT. And they do profit. Paying $300 for a console that blows away most PCs sold to date is insane. Sony needs to charge MORE for it's consoles and ditch the licensing fees. Then we'll start to see more $30 console games and even more $20 or less.
Console companies are bloated. They've become these massive churning gears that cost way more to maintain then they productively produce.
FF13 - Worth the $60 (when it was new)
Angry Bird - Worth the $5 (iPad)
So...WTF is the problem?
I think it's hilarious that people are against COMPETITION. Those are some seriously ignorant people who are in desperate need of an education.
I also think it's hilarious that Dev companies like to pretend that in order to release cheaper games, they need to produce lower level games. Trying cutting the fat you damn pigs!!!!

Now consoles are just another way to make a shitload of profit for companies and devs.
I'm surprised that there are only four companies with consoles.
1. Microsoft (Xbox 360)
2. Nintendo (Wii)
3. OnLive (OnLive)
4. Sony (PS3)
OnLive is highly impressive because the games are streamed from the clouds (servers) and it plays great, just as if you'd own it.
Nintendo didn't "invent" or make an "innovative" console with game streaming like OnLive did.

Good on him to defend his pride while understanding how fragile his argument is. Imagine if novels died out in favor of short stories written by hipsters and fanfics posted on livejournal.

Just like in ace attorney games, being a lawyer doesn't mean it's our job to get a guilty or not guilty verdict, ideally we should look for the truth and pursue it for a better future.
Things like those are the "value" that we pay for games
Will these retarded cheap dollar games like angry birds teach us these life's lessons we get from some premium console games?
Cheap dollar games are nothing but time wasters, we almost do not get anything from it in return, only slight entertainment, but that's all.
It just shows that his mind is only set to make a quick buck, a true game developer should lead mankind to a better society through the games he make, it might sound silly but it's an ideal goal
