Wii U's Launch Numbers Look Good Next to Xbox 360, PS3 |
Listed in: News Tags: Nintendo, wii u launch
When comparing launch numbers for the Wii U to those of the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, Nintendo’s latest console does more than hold its own.

The Wii U has had a pretty successful launch. During its first four weeks on the market, the Nintendo HD console managed to sell over 1.8 million units. That number looks great when you compare it to the launches of the Xbox 360 and the PS3. When the Xbox 360 was released in 2005, it sold 940,000 units during its first four weeks on the market. Sony’s PlayStation 3, which was released one year later in 2006, managed to sell only 540,000 units.
While the Wii U’s launch certainly looks great alongside its competitors from Microsoft and Sony, it did not match the success of its predecessor, the original Wii, which sold in excess of 2 million units during its first four weeks. Regardless, it did come close enough and might have surpassed the Wii’s launch if not for some re-stocking issues with retailers.
As for the Wii U’s future, it looks to be bright. Nintendo has announced that it plans to release over 25 games for the console by the end of March, which should increase its appeal.
