Most Nintendo fans are relatively honest when it comes to admitting that their favorite company's consoles haven't exactly been the most media-friendly devices in the world. Without some kind of special hack for instance, you can't even play a standard DVD movie on the Wii, which is still somewhat of a shock considering how easy the implementation could have been. Still, the big N seems like it's trying to turn things around with a brand new service launching for the Wii U known appropriately as TVii.

In an attempt to make the Wii U a bit more useful to consumers, Nintendo's next gen console will have some great interactive TV features that is sure to pique the interest of series junkies everywhere. As part of the TVii service all Wii U users will be able to access many popular streaming media services such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, and even your own home DVR box should you choose to connect accounts.
Once everything is setup, the service will more or less act as a personalized television hub. At the home screen, you will see all of the streaming options you have available to you alongside personalized recommendations for new shows based on what you have been watching. By using the gamepad, you'll be able to see what all of your friends are watching too, and show them your activity through posts on Facebook and Twitter. TVii even has a sports section where you'll be able to get your up to the minute game details while you are watching other programs. If that's not enough for you though, there will supposedly be options to watch live games as well.
Oh and did I mention it will be totally free for the US and Canada? Sure a service like this is only as good as its licensing deal, but are you excited to see what TVii is all about?
