User-Created Levels in Mario's Future? |

Level design has always been one of the greatest hallmarks of then Mario series. Ever since the beginnings in then early eighties, users have been fortunate enough to witness something truly spectacular that has had us running jumping and swimming our way to victory. However as social interaction become more and more important within today's gaming stratosphere where does that leave Mario? According to one of the games lead developers, its possible we all could be making our own levels soon enough.
In the very latest Mario installment for the Wii U, there are indeed some small aspects of creativity involved. For example, you can take one look at the Coin Battle mode and see how things just might get a little but interesting. In its present state, users are allowed to place the coins where they want them, so in a sense this helps to design the levels on which the multiple players compete. It's a pretty nice touch, but don't you think it's possible that things could be taken just a little bit further by designing the entire scope of the map? Games like LittleBigPlanet have done it long before now, so inspiration is certainly close at hand.

When asked about the possible feature emerging in a latter game Masataka Takemoto had this to say: "There is a possibility of this happening in the future, but there’s no use just blindly making that feature available. We would need to carefully think about how to make such a system work." That is indeed true. Mario is a game with a deep legacy that can't afford to be tarnished, but it seems such options are being considered. It's unlikely that we would see them any time really soon, but it might be an interesting thought. After all, Mario has been somewhat similar over the years, hasn't it? A real social community could do the franchise some good.
