For those of you who are unaware, the Wii U has a system update to be installed as a day one prerequisite for running the console. Essentially it includes a lot of system files that are absolutely necessary for the full Wii U experience including access to the eShop and Wii backwards compatibility. That being said, all of that is going to take a long time to download, so I urge you to please keep the console turned on during the entire process.

I know what it's like to get a new console. Sometimes we just can't wait to get ready and going to step into the next generation. Not to mention, as a culture, instant technology has allowed us to become a little bit more impatient. That's why none of us really loved the idea of having to install a patch as soon as we powered up our brand new machine. Still, what that single update offers us is a whole new world of stuff to keep us entertained. If you want access to Netflix or the updated gamepad web browser, then you'll need to get this update if you really want to hop into the game.

As if the idea of a patch isn't bad enough, all of that content has been reported to take a full hour to download. That being said, there have been quite a few gamers that have wrongfully assumed their console had frozen during the process. After all, new systems always have software issues that can lead to crashes so why not now? If this thought pops into your head during the update, I urge you to reconsider. Under this assumption users have actually already completely bricked their brand new Wii U, so please try to think sensibly and keep all switches and buttons in the on position during this and any other future system updates. You'll thank me later.

most systems keep a backup that will bot if the update fails/gets interrupted.
NextGen Wii has no backup cache? that's just a brick waiting to happen..

Reminds me of how you sometimes have to beg retard not to swallow their fork just because it tastes like the food they are eating.

You must have that problem a lot around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

It is true this is an obvious thing for lots of people, but take a quick Google search and you will see that this error is more common than it should be. Sometimes you have to write for the larger audience, but I definitely get the confusion.

I could have sworn seeing a screenshot of the update process with the message that the power off button has been temporarily disabled.

Not that I know of, but it's possible. You should see all the brick tweets though. It's somewhat ridiculous lol.

I never saw any such message and yeah it took me over an hour to update. Around 1.5 hours. I assumed it was because the servers were swamped. Since an internet connection is not required to use I wonder if all the initial game discs have the update and if updating from them is quicker? Or was there no option to skip the update? I don't recall, I just did it.

I get the feeling those initial updates for games are more of an anti-piracy measure and will be from the internet.

PS: Whenever I do a firmware update for something like a console or a BDP, I just cook something or go out to eat. I know that there is nothing I can do to help it and messing with it just runs the risk of corruption.

Nice strategy. Unfortunately many weren't quite so patient! :P

Nope. I turned off my internet and booted a new game today. Did the same thing. It comes from the disc.

There is no required internet connection to own/use a Wii U.

Maybe it's an up-to-the minute/week bug patch, much like when you install something on a computer.

Never underestimate the calming powers of going out to a restaurant with a friend, or by yourself, and ordering something and sitting back and eating it nice and slow and having a good time.
