Nintendo Branching into Multimedia with Wii U

Everyone knows that Nintendo’s Wii U console is heading for shelves sometime in 2012, but details are a bit scarce. We've seen the huge tablet/controller they’re packaging with the device, and we know there will be motion control and some familiar faces, but that’s about it.

However, news broke yesterday that Nintendo may have its eye on more than just the gaming community, and is quietly working on its own app store packed with a variety of apps that will be ready for the Wii U’s launch. According to a person “familiar” with the device’s development, Nintendo is looking to bring a much wider variety of applications to the console, likely in an effort to diversify its offerings and keep up with the multimedia capabilities of the PS3 and Xbox 360.

While these are merely rumors at the current stage of development, it makes sense for Nintendo to allow third-party apps on its device. The tablet screen is practically built for browsing the web and reading emails, and the device with the most functionality is going to be the winner in a time where the technical differences between systems are increasingly negligible.

What do you think of a Nintendo app store? Would more apps provide you with more incentive to pick up a Wii U?

Why? You don't have a DVD player yet? DVD is a dying breed anyway, HD is the future and it sure as in hell wont support BD playback.

So....the average person simply does not care about their Wii paying DVDs. Anyone who does, is the minority.

Minority loses, welcome to planet Earth!

in truth, older Wiis can boot dvd5/9 movie and game discs after a few software tweaks. it all depends on your confidence as a modder. never tried with newer revisions though.

I recently picked up a 3DS about 3 months ago. I am really happy with the video streaming and Eshop...but....and here is a huge but.... I miss trophies and achievements..which is limited to the Mii crap games...and; there is not alot to do unlike the 360 which rains supreme with it's online content. I am not a fanboy, I have all systems, but NIN needs to step it up if they wish to conquer the hearts of all gamers!!!

Nintendo... what are you doing... I hope this ends up a really good idea because I know these guys to be good with gaming stuff but they haven't shown a lot in other factors. Whoo... Let this be a good idea, please.

The rumor is the CES showing will be identical to E3. While I can't wait to get my hands on the WiiU again I sure hope they give us more this time around. Even if it's only info.
