Nintendo backtracks GameCube downloads statement |
Listed in: News Tags: downloads, GameCube, Nintendo

A Nintendo of America representative said yesterday that Wii U would have downloadable GameCube games, but an official statement from the publisher says otherwise.
"To clarify the capabilities of the Wii U system: As correctly stated, Wii U will not play Nintendo GameCube discs, however Nintendo has not made any announcements regarding downloadable content," the statement read.
Many readers were angry that Wii U won't play GameCube discs, even though no console plays original discs or carts from two generation before it.
It's very possible that Nintendo wants to make a formal announcement for downloadable GameCube games on Wii U. The publisher has done things like this before; they denied the existance of the Nintendo DS Lite one day, and then announced it the day after. Considering Wii U supports external hard drives, I don't see why Nintendo won't offer GCN games for download.

You call that many? I counted 1 irate reader and 2 more readers that simply didn't like it.

The PS3 plays original PS1 discs just fine.

I guess gamecube compatibility is out so nintendo can continue the practice of re-selling old games many gamers once owned on disc.

Again you ignore the PS3 (discs) and the GBA (carts), which both play games from two generations back.

No, I was mad they were offering digital versions of the disk but refusing to let me use my real copies, despite the disk drive being perfectly capable of reading the discs.

There haven't been any console that has had disk-based media for a whole 3 generations. Except for the Playstation line which does support PSX games two generations later. It is strictly a decision of Nintendo that GCN disks will not work in the WiiU. Saying it's fine because it hasn't been done before is silly.
