Jaffe: Wii U won't be nearly as successful as the Wii |

The outspoken God of War and Twisted Metal series creator predicts that Nintendo's next gen console won't attain the same level of success as its predessor.

Speaking GamingUnion, David Jaffe believes that there are far too many obstacles for the Wii U to tackle.
“I don’t think it will do anywhere near as well as the Wii did,” says Jaffe. “… I think there’s a large enough percentage of people who bought the Wii as something other than a gaming device, and turned it into the fad that it was.
“Most of that percentage is going to go away now. I don’t think enough of them have become ‘gamers’. They tried [the Wii], now they’re onto something like free-to-play MMOs and then they’ll move onto something else. How many of them got converted into actual gamers? I don’t think a large portion.”
The biggest hurdle according to Jaffe, Apple products, because they are becoming more mainstream specially for kids .
“A lot of kids want iPads, iPhones and iPods now. And a large portion of the people who would’ve been interested in traditional Nintendo stuff, beyond core gamers, are just as happy playing Storm in a Teacup on iPad versus a new 3D Mario,” he said.
“Between those two audiences going away and the number of choices core gamers already have on the other systems – which, let’s be honest, a lot of them like super-amazing graphics on their 3D TVs and stuff like that – a lot of people are going to be better served going to the competition.”
He continued: “I think the Wii U is going to be less successful than the Wii, probably 50% less successful. I don’t think you’re going to see the Wii U at number one in the next console generation.”
Announced earlier this month at E3, Nintendo new console features a radical touch screen controller, precision motion controls, and full HD graphics. It is slated to arrive sometime in 2012.

I'm inclined to agree with him on most points. Although half is likely a bit too exaggerated, the Wii U definitely won't be a bigger hit than the WII.

The only thing I'm astounded on is the fact that with the app market getting so big a lot of these apps are gonna be getting priced as high as normal video games and that might undercut the market for them.

But there are things to consider which can to upgrade fromm wii to wiiU.
For examples, families who already own multiple wii peripherals like multiple wiimotes or wiimote plus and multiple nunchk & classic controllers as well as wiifit (like my family did). They already invested much and all those things are compatible with wii U.
But for starter, I'm afraid it will cost alot in order to take the full party gaming experiences promised for the wiiU.

Even at 50 percent less successful that's still gonna be one hell of a leap over the other two consoles.

We don't know what the other two are baking for next gen home console yet. God knows, they may had some pretty good ideas too, still there is a possibility that it become more successful than wiiU.
If one of the other two announce the next console at next year E3 -probably Microsoft- , Nintendo may lose again a huge part of people who call themselves hardcore gamers.

ALot of parents bought their kids the wii cause they thought it was family friendly and kid safe. Many younger kids wante it cause they thought the move controls were fun. While 50% is too much, a drop I fell is likely and will probably happen.
