If Nintendo Wants To Improve Its Standings With The Wii U, Here's What They Have To Do - The Public Is Terribly Misinformed About the Wii U |

Nintendo Needs to Tell Us That The Wii U Is Not Just an Add-On
I know that to a lot of you on this site are much more hardcore and probably know all about (or even own) a Wii U, but that certainly isn't true for everybody. Right from the beginning, many of the casual sector had assumed that the Wii U was jst another peripheral that you could add to your existing console. After all, the launch announcement for the system did come to fruition long before any other companies had really begun to talk about the next generation so it seemed like Nintendo was really trying to do what it always had by selling us new controllers. Not to mention the name Wii U doesn't exactly denote that its an actual successor to anything but rather an add on that U can use with your Wii. Do a little Google search and you'll obviously see that's not the case, but most consumers already feel they know what it is, and they "don't want to spend $350 on a controller."

The troubles don't stop there either, because as I have already mentioned, the ads do nothing to clarify this assumption either. Sure the speech-free montages look cool but what the public really needs is an explanation. Take a slower approach and maybe have an ad where a kid is playing the Wii U and his grandfather asks what it is. The kid can explain that this is an entirely new console with games that look more realistic than the Wii and have more ways to interact with games. In fact, you could even take it a step further and have the grandfather say something like "so it's not just a remote?" It sounds really stupid when I type it I'm sure, but sometimes you need to reach down to that level to get people to understand what you're selling. The Wii U needs to be a toy, but it also needs to be a toy we understand.
Other than games and identity, a stronger web presence could also be just what the Wii U needs.

I don't know about yours but all three of my local Best Buys in SoCal USA have shrunk in the console area by at least 40%. That's massive! I asked the store manager at one of the locations and she flat out said console sales are through the floor.
